Legislative Co-Chairs Release Budget

UPCOMING EVENTS JANUARY |

The Co-Chairs of the Oregon Legislature's Joint Ways and Means Committee released their initial budget proposal for the 2017-2019 biennium on Thursday, Jan. 19. With $7.8 billion identified for K-12 education, this is approximately $200 million less than what Gov. Brown proposed in her budget and approximately $700 million less than what would allow HSD to maintain current service level.

K-8 Science Pilot Materials Review
|
|
District staff have been working on our K-8 science materials adoption for the past two years and are close to making their final recommendation to the Board. Piloted materials will be available for review at the Administration Center, 3083 NE 49th Place, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Rescheduled Academic Program Development Open House

Please note the Academic Program Development Open House that was previously scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23, has been rescheduled to Monday Jan. 30, in response to inclement weather. The Open House will take place at the Brookwood Public Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and will provide attendees the opportunity to view the draft 2017-18 course catalog and forecasting sheets, and ask any questions they may have about the academic program development process.

School Board Appreciation and Information Sessions

January is Board Appreciation Month and we'd like to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank our seven volunteer Board Members for their dedicated service to HSD students! If you have an interest in board service and are considering running for election this May, please join us at one of two upcoming information sessions: brown bag lunch on Wednesday, Feb. 15, noon to 1 p.m., at the Administration Center, 3083 NE 49th Place; or coffee chat on Thursday, Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., at Manaia Coffee House, 203 E. Main Street.

HSF Innovative Grant Process Now Open
|
|
The Hillsboro Schools Foundation (HSF) is once again offering $50,000 in grants to support innovative curricula, programs or projects. The first step in the process is to submit a one-page abstract that describes your idea no later than 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Surplus Warehouse is Open and Ready to Explore
|
|
Did you know that the District's Surplus Warehouse, 22775 NW Dogwood, is open daily from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and that it has all sorts of "buried treasures" for staff to discover? Recently, two staff members from Lincoln Street Elementary School found seven tables and 10 chairs they will use to set up a new computer lab at their school! District Media Assistant Linden Becker runs the Warehouse and can be contacted at 503-640-7882 if you'd like to schedule your own treasure hunt.

Proud to be HSD Trailer Viewing and Dreaming
|
|
Please join us on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Administration Center if you are interested in taking a look at our newly-purchased Proud to be HSD trailer and helping us conceptualize and plan how it should be retrofit for a wide variety of uses. The PTBHSD trailer is a 26-foot enclosed trailer that will be used as an HSD showcase and mechanism for building community. The event will be especially pertinent to high school CTE teachers and students, but is open to everyone. Community partners also will be present at the meeting to discuss ideas for how we can collaborate on mutually-beneficial outreach events.

Transfer Deadline Approaching

Please note that the priority window for submitting in-district transfer requests closes on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 5 p.m. HSD students wishing to continue or begin an in-district transfer for the 2017-18 school year should complete and submit paperwork by this date.

SENG Parent Group Meetings
|
|
|
Parents of gifted students are invited to participate in a series of guided discussions on supporting the emotional needs of gifted children. The meetings will take place on Thursdays from Feb. 2 through March 9, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at South Meadows Middle School, 4690 SE Davis Road. Class size is limited; registration deadline is Jan. 30.

HSF Night at the Portland Winterhawks

Hillsboro Schools Foundation Night at the Portland Winterhawks game on Saturday, Jan. 7, was canceled due to weather. It has now been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 31, when the Winterhawks take on the Everett Silvertips! City of Hillsboro Events: State of the City and Family Fiesta

|
The City of Hillsboro is hosting a free Family Fiesta on Saturday, Jan. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. at M&M Marketplace, 346 SW Walnut Street. The event will feature games, music, art, and fun activities for all ages. Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, newly sworn-in Mayor Steve Callaway will deliver the 2017 State of the City address at the Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E. Main Street, with a reception and refreshments at 5 p.m. and the program from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
