PARADE OF SUCCESS

The January breakfast program featured the Parade of Success, which recognizes specific members and their successes that have come through Dane Buy Local.  Thes following are just some of the examples of successful connections made through Dane Buy Local. Let us know if you have a success story that you would like to share.

Yola's Cafe  - "There is no other organization in Dane County that provides education, collaboration, and promotion for their members as well as Dane Buy Local. My membership with Dane Buy Local began in 2009, when I first launched Yola's Cafe.  Being a member has helped me with my business in various capacities. By attending the monthly breakfasts and evening socials I've met other successful and knowledgeable local business owners and have been able to employ many of their services. These supporting services include contractors, accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, attorneys, sign makers, graphic designers, and many others.  Anyone focused on growing their business has to give serious thought as to why they don't belong. Meet great people and establish strong connections and introductions while serving our community - show me where else that can happen as effectively as it has here. The message of keeping our money local makes so much sense and it is a privilege to be a part of one of the largest Buy Local Organizations in the US on a City/County-wide scale." - Lance Ratze, Owner, Yola's Cafe.

Mary's Daughter LLC - Barbara Boustead's successes have come from the relationships she has with so many members of Dane Buy Local. She connected a client with Steve and Nicole Broyles, Broyles & Company CPAs, and used Bethke Heating for a problem with her own furnace. She would not have known about them if it weren't for Dane Buy Local. She also sent a photo to the MSNBC open forum Your Business with J.J. Ramberg, a weekly show for small business owners that focuses on tips and strategies to run businesses. MSNBC ran her photo and may be interested in featuring Madison in a future show about the importance of shopping local.

2017-2018 GUIDEBOOK HIGHLIGHTS

We have now started working on the very popular 2017-2018 Guide, Dane Buy Local's printed membership directory. This past year we ran out of Guides with 25,000 being distributed around South Central Wisconsin. This year we want to highlight some of our members with 1/2 page profiles in the Guide. This will include an approximately 100-word description about what makes your business unique in the area, plus a photo. Limited spots are available for $250 each. Contact Colin at colin@danebuylocal.com to reserve your space.

YOUTH INTERN PLACEMENTS NEEDED
Do you have an interest in hiring a youth intern (with barriers) this summer? Keep reading if you would consider it and I will provide some further explanation from  Christine AmeighOwner of Slide Food Cart and Beyond Catering,  Director of Let's Eat Out!, and  Director of Carts for Community.

This is the third year of our program in partnership with Briarpatch Youth Services. We are looking for 20 or so small, local food businesses where the youth will have an opportunity to work directly with entrepreneurs.

Details of the program:

Business owner will interview eligible youth for summer employment by mid-April
  • Youth will receive basic customer service and food preparation training prior to their first day of work.
  • Youth will receive ServSafe training and take the ServSafe test prior to their first day of work.
  • Carts For Community will be an available liaison throughout the employment. As these are some of Madison's highest risk youth, there may be a need for assistance in communicating with and understanding the youth. C4C will be on-call should the immediate need for assistance surface.
  • Youth must be paid $9 per hour - if the required hours are met, business owner will be reimbursed for 60 of the total hours.
  • Business owner must agree to employ the intern a total of 120 hours from June 17 - August 19, an average of about 15 hours per week.
  • Business owner must commit to a 3-4-hour training session on how to work with youth who have barriers and commit to our code of ethics.
  • Business owner must commit to a 4-hour retreat with their new intern (June 12th).
  • Business owner must legally employ the youth on reported payroll and carry workman's compensation insurance (if this is your only  barrier to hiring, we can help on our end).
  • Youth will not be able to work on Fridays, as they have training that day.
I realize that this was a lot of information up front. I appreciate you making it this far! I would like to plan a business owner orientation meeting for February. This meeting will go into further detail about the program. You will also hear from business owners who have hired an intern in the last two years and from one of our interns from last summer.

Please respond to me directly if you would be interested in attending the meeting and I will put together another email with further details about the orientation. Attending the orientation will not commit you to the program, it will just provide further information about it.

Even if you had an intern in the past two years, I strongly encourage your interest in attending the meeting, as some things have changed and improved!

Thank you,
Christine Ameigh
