The purpose of the Traveling Fellowship is to enable students in graduate degree programs in architecture, interior design and the decorative arts, art history, conservation, and museum studies to travel to England to pursue research projects related to any aspect of the work of Sir John Soane or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collections. These include Egyptian antiquities, classical antiquities, casts (in general), sculpture galleries, the history of museums, authentic restoration, architecture and architectural drawings c. 1650-1850, architectural models, architectural theory c. 1650-1850, neoclassical sculpture, the Grand Tour (in general), Hogarth, George Dance Junior, Joseph Michael Gandy, Sir William Chambers, Sir Christopher Wren and Hawksmoor, architecture and decoration, Robert and James Adam and English Regency painting. Two awards are presented - one to a student of architecture and the second open to all candidates. Recipients are selected by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation Fellowship Advisory Committee.

Eligibility:
In order to be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in a
graduate degree program in architecture, interior design and the decorative arts, art history, conservation, and museum studies or other field appropriate to utilizing the resources of the Soane Museum. Students can be enrolled in any recognized graduate degree program world-wide.

Three letters of recommendation. |

Submission of proof of enrollment in a qualified academic program. |
Award Conditions:
|

|
The award provides a payment to the award recipient just prior to the beginning of the work and research period of the project and is to include any related travel expenses and housing for the period work is undertaken. |
|

At the end of the research project the award recipient is requested to submit a letter on the results of the project. The submission may be in the form of a written letter/paper or a scanned sketchs. |

The recipient may be asked by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation to deliver a talk, at a mutually agreeable time and venue, on a fellowship topic related to Sir John Soane, or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collection. |
Housing and Budget:
The grant of $5,000 is paid to the awardee and may be allocated as the graduate student sees fit within the scope of the approved project. Payments are made
upon confirmation of
study dates
of the awardee
for time
to be spent
in London or beyond. Housing is available in small hotels or at places

Typical airfare in 2017 was between $850 and $1,000 round-trip - and a separate grant will cover up to $1,000. Timeframe:
There is no pre-set amount of time to be spent in London or at the Museum, nor is there a pre-set time period during the year - as long as it is within a one year from the time the award is being made.
