Exterior 
The purpose of the Traveling Fellowship is to enable students in graduate degree programs in architecture, interior design and the decorative arts, art history, conservation, and museum studies to travel to England to pursue research projects related to any aspect of the work of Sir John Soane or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collections. These include Egyptian antiquities, classical antiquities, casts (in general), sculpture galleries, the history of museums, authentic restoration, architecture and architectural drawings c. 1650-1850, architectural models, architectural theory c. 1650-1850, neoclassical sculpture, the Grand Tour (in general), Hogarth, George Dance Junior, Joseph Michael Gandy, Sir William Chambers, Sir Christopher Wren and Hawksmoor, architecture and decoration, Robert and James Adam and English Regency painting. Two awards are presented - one to a student of architecture and the second open to all candidates. Recipients are selected by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation Fellowship Advisory Committee.

Background:
The Traveling Fellowship was established to support research in graduate degree programs in architecture, interior design and the decorative arts, art history, conservation, and museum studies , in the Soanean tradition, in accordance with Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation' s mission to foster the knowledge and appreciation of architecture and art in the United States and abroad.

Eligibility: 
In order to be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in architecture, interior design and the decorative arts, art history, conservation, and museum studies or other field appropriate to utilizing the resources of the Soane Museum.  Students can be enrolled in any recognized graduate degree program world-wide. 

Criteria for Selection:

Completion of the program application form which is available as a PDF on our web site or it can be sent by request - send an email to: [email protected]   (Note: there is not an online application format, just the PDF form for completing and mailing.)

Three letters of recommendation.

Submission of proof of enrollment in a qualified academic program.

Award Conditions: 
-
The award provides a payment to the award recipient just prior to the beginning of the work and research period of the project and is to include any related travel expenses and housing for the period work is undertaken.

At the end of the research project the award recipient is requested to submit a letter on the results of the project. The submission may be in the form of a written letter/paper or a scanned sketchs.

The recipient may be asked by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation to deliver a talk, at a mutually agreeable time and venue, on a fellowship topic related to Sir John Soane, or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collection.

Housing and Budget: 
The grant of $5,000 is paid to the awardee and may be allocated as the graduate student sees fit within the scope of the approved project.  Payments are made upon confirmation of  study dates of the awardee for time to be spent in London or beyond.  Housing is available in small hotels or at places such as International House London (IHL , for example , can be from £240+ per week and higher (approx. $350) , therefore $700  for two weeks , and $1,400 for four weeks . Based on those figures, the balance remaining after  accommodations for  food and expenses would be between $4,300 for tw o weeks to $3,500 for a month , which is approximately $116 to $150 per day for lunch/dinner, admissions, local transportation and other costs.   Typical airfare in 2017 was between $850 and $1,000 round-trip - and a separate grant will cover up to $1,000.  Please note: Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation and Sir John Soane's Museum do not endorse or have any relationship with IHL or travel vendors .  I nformation provided is purely for reference purposes as are the amounts provided in this "mock" budget.
 
Timeframe: 
There is no pre-set amount of time to be spent in London or at the Museum, nor is there a pre-set time period during the year - as long as it is within a one year from the time the award is being made.
