Dear Friends,

This Sunday is the last Sunday after Epiphany and before Lent begins; this is the Sunday when we hear the story of the Transfiguration--a most remarkable revelation of who Jesus is in this season that is all about revealing the true nature of Jesus. We've seen the nature of Jesus revealed in baptism. We've learned that we are to live differently in the Kingdom Jesus announces--loving and forgiving in lavish ways; following God's, not Caesar's, laws; being on the side of the very ones the world scorns; and acting as salt and light in the world. Come, consider Jesus in the ultimate revelation on the mountain top.

And from that peak, we are then plunged into Lent just a week from today with Ash Wednesday services.

How will you observe Lent this year? There are some options below--from classes on Basic Discipleship and Confession, to stations of the cross, to a Lenten Quiet Day. I hope you will participate in one or more of these opportunities, but even more important, I encourage you to commit to coming to church on Ash Wednesday, each Sunday in Lent, and to all of the Holy Week services. If you live into these 40 days, I think you'll find yourself changed.

Beloved, you are beautiful, I love you, and God adores you.

In Christ,  Mother Suzanne+

Be Perfect -  The Rev. E. Suzanne Wille preaches on the seventh Sunday after the Epiphany (February 19, 2017).

"We will need to resist injustice- that's one of the ways we Christians are called to be perfect, to be holy, to be separate from a world that still too often loves to oppress and divide- but even as we do that, we are called to love, love even our enemies, even those who persecute us- for we are never to give up on anyone because, as Congressman [John] Lewis says, "Hate is too heavy a burden to bear."

You can read it here.

The Last Sunday After Epiphany: A Worship Note

This Sunday is our last Sunday after the Epiphany and before Lent begins, when we always hear the story of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. This is also known as "Alleluia" Sunday, and for this special day, we offer a choral setting of the Mass by the late Romantic English composer Harold Darke.

As is our custom when the choir offers its prayers and praise on behalf of the congregation, parishioners are seated during the singing of the Gloria, Sanctus-Benedictus and Agnus Dei.

Adding to the day's festive nature are solos by Greg Wilson, Mary Robinson and Norman Brandenstein (Darke) and Lucy Wortham (Darke and Schütz); the opening voluntary is played by Nikolai Peek and Dalong Ding accompanies the anthem and offertory hymn.

Plan to stay for a special Mardi Gras coffee hour this Sunday hosted by the All Saints Events Committee.

Bring your palms from last year's Palm Sunday so that we can burn them to make ashes for Ash Wednesday!

Stile Antico
will offer a master class at All Saints this Tuesday, February 28 from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. We have invited a number of other church choirs to join us for this exciting opportunity!

GET BACK TO THE BASICS!

Keep a Holy Lent: Basic Discipleship: Wednesdays, 6:45 - 8:15 pm. March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5.

What does it mean to be a disciple? Each week we will examine one the of the holy habits of discipleship: Prayer. Worship. Learning. Service. Giving. Participants will be linked as prayer partners, and much of the class is small group work of support and accountability in following Jesus in our daily lives. At the end of class, all will be invited to join ongoing discipleship groups to continue the journey. RSVP to Mother Suzanne by March 3.

Basic Anglicanism: Wednesdays, 6:45 - 8:15 pm. April 26, May 3, 10, and 17.

Want to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church? Then plan on taking both Basic Discipleship and Basic Anglicanism!

There is a $20-per-person nonrefundable fee to cover refreshments and class materials. Scholarships are available, please contact Mother Suzanne for financial assistance. RSVP to Mother Suzanne.

These classes are important and as such we ask that you commit to attend all the sessions offered within each module.

Tuesdays in Lent: Confession

Book Study on Confession:  Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm. March 7, 14, 21, 28, and April 4.
Take part in a Lenten book study focused on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Reverend Hillary Raining, seminary classmate of Mother Suzanne, has written a new book Joy in Confession: Reclaiming Sacramental Reconciliation that helps readers view confession and reconciliation as an opportunity for forgiveness and new life. Each short chapter explores a different component of confession.

Each participant will receive a photocopy of the manuscript to read and discuss, the opportunity to participate in the sacrament of reconciliation, and the chance to remark on the draft before publication.

RSVP to Mother Suzanne by March 5.
