Letter from the Artistic Director

We have no Mainstage productions to offer this month, but don't wait to get your tickets for that American classic, John Steinbeck's incandescent  Of Mice and Men , which opens on March 31 and runs for two weekends.

In the meantime, we're trying to pack February with a full menu of smaller, more diverse events, and to reach out into the community.

On February 18, we're throwing a fundraiser for the Toledo Rep, with music, libations, hors d'oeuvre s, and a silent auction of custom paintings done by local area artists inspired by the song selections of the evening. The evening will also include a special guest performance by 13abc's Tony Geftos. Showstoppers:  A Toledo Rep Cabaret  promises to be a memorable evening. It all takes place at 8:00 pm at the beautiful 20 North Gallery at 18 North St. Clair Street. Tickets are available at toledorep.org, at the door, or by calling (419) 243-9277. All proceeds from the night will benefit the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.

February 11 marks the inaugural performance of "Toledo Voices," a new series that brings you readings of works-in-progress by local playwrights. It's your chance to be the first audience for some exciting new plays, and to give your feedback to the playwrights and directors in a talkback that follows each reading. The lineup: February 11, Tania by Nina Wright; February 25, Life and Death by F. Scott Regan & Coffee Cream by Tanner DuVall; March 11, Sheba Rules by Deborah Coulter-Harris. Tickets are available at toledorep.org, at the door, or by calling (419) 243-9277.

Our classes for both young and old continue to thrive. You can see the young ones perform in a short performance on Saturday, February 25 at 12:15 pm, or catch the adults creating comic mayhem at the Adult Improv Showcase on Monday February 27 at 7:00 pm. Both of these events do not require tickets, but a donation is always appreciated.

So even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, we can help take the bite out of winter with some live and local entertainment.

See you at the theatre,

 ON STAGE NOW:

A new series that brings you readings of works-in-progress by local playwrights. It's your chance to be the first audience for some exciting new plays, and to give your feedback to the playwrights and directors in a talkback that follows each reading.

Each reading will be followed by a talkback with the
writer, cast, and director.

All performances are held at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.

Synopsis:
This hilarious one-act play parodies the long-running television series Law and Order.
In the fairy tale criminal justice system, the characters from fairy tales and nursery rhymes are represented by two separate yet equally ridiculous groups: the fairy tale police who investigate fairy tale crime and the fairy tale district attorneys who prosecute the fairy tale offenders. These are their stories.

Full of warmth, heart, and outrageous humor. And there's a scene at Cabela's. Winner of an Ohio Arts Council award for Individual Excellence.

A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

Come be a part of "Toledo's Community Theatre"!

Bill Quinlan appeared in the Toledo Repertoire Theatre's production of Terrence McNally's comedy 'It's Only a Play'

Q: What would you like us to know about you?

A: I am the inspiration for a well-known Saturday Night Live character. I was an administrator at San Jose Repertory Theatre in the early '80s when we brought in a semi-well known Bay Area comedian, Rob Schneider, to do an original musical satire called UP the Yup written by the great musical satirist Roy Zimmerman (I was Rob's understudy as well in the show). Rob would come into my office every now and then and ask, "What's up, Bill?" and I would answer "Oh, I'm just copying some scripts for the reading..." or whatever. Rob would immediately start riffing, "The Q man, Qmeister, makin' copies ..." and thus I became the subject of one of his most famous SNL characters. Immortalized! LOL!

The art, the ego, and the wit of theater take center stage in the comedy It's Only a Play, opening Friday at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.

The setting for Terrence McNally's play is a party in a Manhattan town house on opening night of playwright Peter Austin's newest work, The Golden Egg. He and a cast of theater people are waiting anxiously for the critics' appraisal - is it good or bad, a hit, or a flop?

For actors, directors, producers and  crew, preparing for a show can be a lot  of fun. The really nerve-wracking part  comes afterward - waiting for reviews,  worrying about attendance, second  guessing every choice made on stage.  "What did we do right? What did we do  wrong?"

This simple truth - that anxiety will  come - is the central idea behind "It's  Only a Play," a Terrence McNally comedy  about a group of actors stressing  out at a party after opening night of a  new show.

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre saw a string of box-office successes in 2016, said Artistic Director Dave DeChristopher, beginning with Calendar Girls in January. "There was a special alchemy in that production, and part of it was having all those veteran actresses that people know, including Madge Levinson, onstage together.

"After that show the hits just kept on coming in terms of box office," he said, citing Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, and A Chorus Line, "which was enormous - we could have run that for more weeks on end."

A Christmas Carol was a highlight for DeChristopher. "I've always been involved from the outside," he said, but this year he was the assistant director of the play. "From the inside, it is really special because of how many children are involved, and how the adults who have done the show often nurture [the children] and make sure they have a magical experience."

"The Best of Broadway!

Our first Young Rep Ed session of 2017 began on January 7 and our theatre was packed full of young, talented artists! What a great way to start the new year!
