President's Message for February
February 2, 2017
"I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me;
and suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord who you seek."

Peace and Greetings,
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus, and is also known as Candlemas Day. Jesus' presentation in the temple by Mary and Joseph signifies God's entrance to His temple. God made man entered His temple, presenting Himself to those who were searching for Him.
Our core value of faith was prominent last week when we were blessed to have Rev. Edmund O'Brien, our founding principal, celebrate the Mass of our patron saint, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. What a gift it was for him and us to be together on this occasion. I was also blessed to travel with 68 other student, parent and faculty pilgrims to Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual March for Life. It was truly inspiring for us to represent St. Paul and I couldn't have been more proud of our faith community in bearing witness to the sanctity of life.
I'm pleased to share that 70 students representing
the incoming Class of 2021 are registering this week to attend St. Paul next fall. With more appointments scheduled over the next couple of months, we anticipate another incoming class of 100+ students. Returning students will receive the 2017-2018 Curriculum Guide tomorrow. Please take time to discuss your child's course schedule with them for next year. Re-registration forms for all returning students with a parent/guardian signature and registration deposit are due to the Guidance office on Wednesday, February 15.
There is no school this Monday, February 6 due to exceeding our student fundraising goal of $22,500 for the Oktoberfest Walkathon last fall. The students previously selected the day after the Super Bowl in anticipation of watching either the New York Giants or New England Patriots play on Super Bowl Sunday.
Some have had their wish granted ... the rest of us are looking forward to watching the commercials!
A reminder that we follow the Bristol Board of Education Winter Vacation schedule, thus there will be no school on Monday, February 20 (Presidents' Day) and Tuesday, February 21.
As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, let me take a moment to sincerely express my gratitude to our students and their families; our faculty, staff and coaches; and our alumni and friends who all call St. Paul Catholic High School home. There is something very special about this school ... it is our unique sense of community built upon a foundation of faith. We are many parts ... but one body!
Oh, least I forget, Happy Groundhog Day! Punxsutawney Phil, the famous Pennsylvania groundhog saw his squirmy shadow this morning thus dashing hopes for an early spring. However, Connecticut Groundhog Chuckles did not see her shadow thus predicting an early spring! One can only hope Chuckles is right!

Dear Parents:
The course selection process for the 2017-2018 school year is beginning this month. Class assemblies will be held on Friday, February 3, in which students will be given the new curriculum guide and a course selection sheet. Miss Bowman, Ms. Corrigan, Ms. Hall and I will explain the registration process and review the curriculum guide to highlight information regarding credit and distribution requirements for graduation, new courses being offered, the option to meet the PE requirement through participation in St. Paul sports, as well as other important details.
For juniors and seniors, we will review the special requirements for participation in the Advanced Placement and the UConn Early College Experience programs. For all students, we will emphasize the importance of choosing courses that provide an appropriate level of challenge while at the same time supporting their future college and career plans. Students interested in enrolling in advanced placement, early college experience, and honors courses should be aware that there may be prerequisites for those courses. Please make sure your child familiarizes themselves with those requirements before seeking their teacher's approval. Enrollment in certain elective courses is restricted to certain grade levels.
Beginning on February 7, students should arrange to make time to meet with their current teachers to discuss their course selections and to obtain signatures for courses where teacher approval is required. Non-leveled courses such as Religion and many electives do not require approval by a teacher. Students will need to submit their course selection sheet with required teacher signatures, their registration payment and a parental signature to the Guidance Office by Friday, February 17. Their school counselor will setup a meeting with them to review their choices for courses for next year once they have submitted their course requests form to Guidance. After meeting with their counselor, should your child need to make changes to their schedule, a new form will be given to them detailing the suggested changes to their course selections for you to sign and return to school. Please remember that students who miss the registration deadline of February 17th run the risk of not being able to enroll in classes that have already reached maximum capacity.

Finance News

Need-based tuition assistance is not renewable from year to year. An application, the required documentation, and the application fee must be submitted to FACTS Grant & Aid by the deadline of February 10, 2017, to be considered for financial aid for the 2017/2018 academic year. The online application fee is $27.
Those who do not complete the application by February 10, 2017 risk not receiving aid, since the available funds will be allocated first to those qualified applicants who have submitted their applications and supporting documents on time. Award announcements will be mailed out in late March or early April.

Scholarships for Seniors
Students/parents can view the list of scholarships and their detailed descriptions, including due dates, in Naviance in the "Colleges" tab. Scroll to the bottom to view the "Scholarship list" under the "Scholarships & Money" tab. Change the "browse by category" to 2016-2017 to access the most current information. Naviance gives the option to check off the box that says, "only show scholarships added or updated since my last visit" to make it easier to identify the newest additions.
Most scholarship applications require supporting documents (such as transcripts or recommendation letters).
To request these documents please obtain/fill out the Scholarship Materials Request Form from the Guidance Office and return it to Mrs. Kilbourne, Guidance Secretary, at least two weeks prior to the scholarship deadline to obtain copies of these documents.
There will be continuous e-mails from the Director of School Counseling to update you on incoming scholarships.
Re-Registration
Students in all grades will receive their registration forms for next year's courses on Friday February 3rd. Registration forms with parent/guardian signature and payment are due to Guidance for all students by Friday, February 17th. Students should see their teachers for level recommendations and signatures between Friday and February 17th.
Please remember that students who turn in their registration form and payment after February 17th run the risk of not being able to enroll in classes that reach maximum capacity.
Counselors will meet with all students, beginning with the rising seniors, in mid/late February to review their course selections and track their progress toward graduation requirements.
ACT Registration for Juniors
The registration deadline for the April 8, 2017 ACT is March 3rd. St. Paul is a test site for the April 8th test.
Seniors: Mid-year Grades to Colleges
Seniors and their parents can be assured that the Guidance Office will
automatically
provide updated transcripts in February to the colleges for which you have active applications. It is especially important that students notify their counselor if they have not been accepted to a college or university, so that a mid-year transcript is not sent.
College Acceptances
Seniors are reminded to provide the Guidance Office with copies of any acceptances/declinations from the colleges they have applied to.

The Class of 2021 incoming students joined us for a fun-filled day last Saturday. These new
Falcons learned all about St. Paul, met new friends, had lunch and played a few favorite games (i.e. the scavenger hunt)!

In Case You Missed It

March for Life
We are so very proud of the students, parents and faculty who participated in the March for Life last Friday, 1/27! The early bus trip from Meriden Thursday morning (check the website for news reporter interviews), sight seeing and Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Up early and marching the chilly streets of our nations capital with hundreds of thousands of people. The day ended with a service for our pilgrims with Archbishop Blair as the celebrant. Thank you to everyone who documented the experience and shared with all of us!

Class of 2017 Half Way to Graduation Party
The Class of 2017 enjoyed a "halfway to graduation" party last Monday evening. They set up the cafeteria from one wall to the other with ONE long table for all to gather, shared a delicious meal, and then wrote letters to themselves which will be mailed to them a week after graduation.
What a great tradition!!!!!

Calling All Sewers! - Senior Quilt Time!
Parents and grandparents, especially those with a senior student, are invited to help assemble this year's memorial quilt. Volunteers can be seasoned quilters or beginners, but should bring a sewing machine (if you have one) and the following supplies:
