California WaterFix Project Schedule
As the proposed California WaterFix project nears final approval from state and federal permitting agencies, decisions are being made about the likely timeline for the design and construction of the project. On January 24, Metropolitan's Engineering Program Manager John Bednarski briefed the board's Special Committee on Bay Delta on the project schedule.
CA WaterFix would modernize the State Water Project so that it is less vulnerable to a variety of risks, including climate change and seismic events. The project will enhance drinking water reliability for the 19 million people who live in the six counties of Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange County and San Diego that are served by Metropolitan Water District, and millions of others throughout the state.
After a Record of Decision authorizes the project, and funding decisions by state and federal water agencies and others are made
, CA WaterFix will move into design, construction and commissioning phases illustrated below with an estimated timeframe of approximately 16 years.
With up to four years of land acquisition, three years of design, and more than 12 overlapping years of various construction projects ahead, it is clear that there is no time to waste in finalizing decisions about California WaterFix.
