Frank Herrera: On the Road Again Photographic Exhibition
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to announce its upcoming photographic exhibition, Frank Herrera: On the Road Again opening January 7, 2017 through April 9, 2017. A native of West Virginia, Frank Herrera has traveled the world with his camera. The images he captures feature the hallmarks of his style: remarkable light, thoughtful composition, and exquisite detail. In this intimate installation, Herrera shares photographs of some of his favorite destinations.
Mr. Herrera is a juror for the 2017 Cumberland Valley Artists and Photographic Exhibition.
Since 1968, Frank Herrera has pursued a freelance career devoted
to commercial and art photography, specializing in photodocumentary work. He has been affiliated with Glen Echo Park, a part of the National Park Service in Glen Echo, MD, as an artist-instructor since 1975. He is responsible for developing and implementing a creative photography program with emphasis on public access to the arts. Herrera took a series of photographs during "The Perfect Moment" Mapplethorpe protest at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1989 for which he is renowned.

Frank Herrera Artist's Talk "Crossreference"
Frank Herrera's lecture will include an account of his Guggenheim Fellowship, during which he documented the Rev. Bernard Coffindaffer's "Crosses of Mercy" at sites throughout West Virginia. The Rev. Bernard Coffindaffer was a businessman turned evangelist who built trios of crosses beside roads in 29 states and two foreign countries. A native of West Virginia, award-winning photographer Frank Herrera has traveled the world with him camera. His photography exhibition "On the Road Again", featuring some of his favorite destinations is on display now through April 9, 2017 in the Baer Gallery. Interactive Sculptures Fast Track Public Art Project
Call for Local Artists
The City of Hagerstown seeks one or two artists to create permanent outdoor sculptures for an audience of all ages on the new Hagerstown Cultural Trail. Works should be completed or well underway by June of 2017. The total budget for one or both works is $50,000. The call is open to artists living or working within 75 miles of Hagerstown. This artist call is presented in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council and the Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Paul Pfau to Headline Cabin Fever Blues Bash
Gearing up for their 22nd anniversary event in June, the City of Hagerstown and the Western Maryland Blues Festival Committee will host the Cabin Fever Blues Bash on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Maryland Theatre, 21 South Potomac Street. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The Cabin Fever Blues Bash raises funds and awareness for the Western Maryland Blues Festival, which is scheduled for June 1-4, 2017 in Hagerstown's City Center and City Park. This year's Cabin Fever Blues Bash entertainer will be Paul Pfau.

Twenty-Third Annual Flower & Garden Show
Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association hosts its Twenty-Third Annual Flower & Garden Show on the HCC campus in Hagerstown, Maryland, Saturday and Sunday, March 11 & 12, 2017. Show hours are Saturday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. & Sunday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hagerstown Community College Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC), Admission is $5; children under 12 are FREE. Free parking is also available on site. More than one hundred exhibitors and vendors will take part in our flower show themed, "Bring Back the Butterflies!" which again promises to be one of the tri-state area's premier events.t! Show participants include: distributors of lawn and garden equipment, pottery and statuary, landscaping, tree services, water ponds, stone products, herbs, florists, forestry experts, wild bird products, jewelry makers and natural gourmet gifts from the garden. One of the most unique elements of our Show is the opportunity shared by exhibitors and visitors to meet, learn, and network with other gardening experts. Regional Extension Agents will also be on hand to answer questions throughout the Show. Everyone is welcome to attend. Seminars and Demonstrations will be held daily, as part of the show, and lend the opportunity for guests to increase their garden knowledge. We hope to see you there!

Faces of Hagerstown Fast Track Public Art Project
An Outdoor Photo Mural Exhibition Celebrating the People of Hagerstown
Do you know Hagerstown, Maryland, and its people? Can you capture the truth of life in Hagerstown in a photo? Then this opportunity is for you!
The City of Hagerstown, in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council and the Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitor's Bureau is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition of Faces of Hagerstown (FOH), a signature public art feature of the new Hagerstown Cultural Trail.
Faces of Hagerstown is a large-scale outdoor photo mural gallery focusing on the human face and the truth of the Hagerstown experience. It will be located along the Hagerstown Cultural Trail in two prominent locations: (1) on a layered chain link mesh screening at the West Antietam Street Entrance Plaza (artist rendering above), and (2) on a restored artistic masonry wall and custom decorative pole covers along the Lee Street segment of the Trail.

6th Annual Children's T-Shirt Contest
Here is your chance to become a part of the Western Maryland Blues Fest, held each year in Hagerstown, MD.
We are searching for one talented student to design this year's kids t-shirt to be sold at the festival. This student must be in Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
30 finalists will have their artwork matted and displayed at the Washington County Arts Council during the Blues Fest Poster Artist Exhibit opening Thursday, June 1, 2017 with a reception from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The show will remain on display through Tuesday, June 27, 2017.
One lucky winner, in addition to having their design placed on the children's t-shirt, will receive complimentary passes to the weekend festivities and will be introduced during the opening ceremonies on Friday, June 2nd.

"Wind Down, Downtown Hagerstown, MARYLAND" is a downtown monthly event in conjunction with The Maryland Theatre, The Washington County Arts Council and the City of Hagerstown.....that is fun for all ages. "Two Museum Thefts that Made Headlines in Baltimore"

of the Walters Art Museum (1994-2013)
Dr. Gary Vikan served as director of the Walters Art Museum for nearly two decades. Since retiring from that post in 2013, he has devoted his time to research and writing. His new memoir, Sacred and Stolen: Confessions of a Museum Director, published by SelectBooks, tells a story of looted fakes, forgeries, and failed exhibitions. In this entertaining lecture, Vikan will recount some of the unexpected and little known challenges of running an art museum. Copies of his memoir will be available for purchase for $20.00 in the Museum Shop.
