STAFF CHANGING PLACES
colors_people_group.jpg
in our Qualicum Beach store

After more than ten years with us, our good friend and wonderful bookseller, Tina Timmermans, retired at the end of January.

We think back on countless times of fun and laughter with Tina.  She brightened each and every day as she served you, our customers, with professional knowledge and expertise, kindness, and her lovely sense of humour.  She will be greatly missed by Tom, Barb, and all our staff, and by all her friends and customers in the book store.

We wish Tina lots of happiness in the years ahead.

We want to welcome our daughter, Marianne Vickers, as our new bookseller in our Qualicum store.  Marianne has many years' experience with us and in the book trade.  For the past ten years she has done an amazing job  looking after our social media communications, including our monthly e-newsletters for adults and children.   Please come in and say 'hello' to her.

And of course, we are delighted that Leigh Buchanan, our talented book diva, will continue to be with us, serving her many customers in our Qualicum Beach book store.

STAFF PICKS
Leigh's Pick
The Dogs of Littleford
by Suzanne Berne

Littlefield, Massachusetts, named one of the Twenty Best Places to Live in America, is full of psychologists and college professors, proud of its fine schools, its girls' soccer teams, its leafy streets, and quaint village center.

Yet when sociologist Dr. Clarice Watkins arrived in Littlefield to study the elements of "good quality of life" someone begins poisoning the town's dogs. Are the poisonings in protest to an off-leash proposal for Baldwin Park-the subject of much town debate-or the sign of a far deeper disorder?

"This is an incisively funny and tender examination of people in a small town. Beautifully written and psychologically tense, the story unravels the poisoning of Littlefield's most innocent inhabitants - its dogs."
Carol's Pick
History of Wolves
by Emily Fridlund

"This novel centers around a young girl living in a remote cabin in a former commune.  She is isolated at home and an outcast at school, but she wants to fit in, to belong somewhere.  Her life starts to expand when she becomes a babysitter for a family who is spending a few weeks in a house across the lake.  The story is told brilliantly, with some beautiful moments, and a tension that builds from the first chapter."
Barb's Pick
The Marriage Bureau
True Stories of 1940's London Matchmakers
by Penrose Halson

In the spring of 1939, with the Second World War looming, two determined twenty-four-year-olds, Heather Jenner and Mary Oliver, decided to open a marriage bureau. They found a tiny office on London's Bond Street and set about the delicate business of matchmaking. Drawing on the bureau's extensive archives, Penrose Halson-who many years later found herself the proprietor of the bureau-tells their story, and those of their clients.

"This is a charming biography about two 24 year olds, Heather Jenner and Mary Oliver, who opened and ran a matchmaking marriage bureau throughout WW2, giving us many delightful stories of the period.  A thoroughly enjoyable read!"
Tom's Pick
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane
by Lisa See

"This is story telling at its best, set in a remote Akha Village in the Yunnan province, blending well researched culture that is immersed in the picking and cultivating of Tea Leaves. This story of Li-Yan and her family is bound together with a beautifully woven plot, that explores the lives of a Chinese mother and her daughter. I highly commend this title."

Jan's Pick
Hidden Figures
by Margot Lee Shetterly

"This is the fascinating true story of the "Human Computers" a group of African American female mathematicians and their experiences working at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Hampton Virginia beginning in World War II.

Like their counterparts, the Bletchley Girls in England, these women worked tirelessly and made important and until now largely unsung contributions. From warplanes to rockets to landing on the moon to space shuttles, these women were fundamental to NASA's greatest successes including the Apollo Missions of the 1960's and beyond."
Marianne's Pick
The Twilight Wife
by A.J. Banner

Thirty-four-year-old marine biologist Kyra Winthrop remembers nothing about the diving accident that left her with a complex form of memory loss. With only brief flashes of the last few years of her life, her world has narrowed to a few close friendships on the island where she lives with her devoted husband, Jacob.

But all is not what it seems. Kyra begins to have visions-or are they memories of a rocky marriage, broken promises, and cryptic relationships with the island residents, whom she believes to be her friends.

"This book started out intriguing and ended up unputdownable. What seems obvious at the beginning becomes clouded as the layers build in this great suspense story. If you enjoyed Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, you'll enjoy this thriller."
Fresh Picked Fiction
Selection Day
by Aravind Adiga
Hardcover

Manjunath Kumar is fourteen and living in a slum in Mumbai. He knows he is good at cricket-if not as good as his older brother, Radha. He knows that he fears and resents his domineering and cricket-obsessed father, admires his brilliantly talented sibling, and is fascinated by curious scientific facts and the world of CSI

But there are many things, about himself and about the world, that he doesn't know. Sometimes it even seems as though everyone has a clear idea of who Manju should be, except Manju himself. When Manju meets Radha's great rival, a mysterious Muslim boy privileged and confident in all the ways Manju is not, everything in Manju's world begins to change, and he is faced by decisions that will challenge his understanding of it, as well as his own self.

It started when I was sixteen years old.
