It's National Catholic Schools Week!

"Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service."

SHHS is excited to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week 2017. As a school community of faith,  knowledge and service we are most grateful to have so many hard-working students, dedicated  alumnae, loyal friends, and inspirational faculty and staff members who are invested in Catholic  education. We THANK ALL OF YOU for your continued support and prayers for this amazing, historic,  Dominican Catholic School in Lincoln Heights. VERITAS!

Alumnae Spotlight

Ms. Stefani Collier

Stefani Collier '88 has been deeply involved in the Sacred Heart familia since her years as a student where she served as the senior class vice-president and as a math tutor. She returned to her Alma Mater as a faculty member in 1994, where she taught English and French until 2011. Stefani has been one of the many individuals who has transformed the experience at Sacred Heart High School. Consumed by wanderlust, she inspired many of her students to go out and explore the world. She lead a total of 10 international trips, taking her students all across the globe from England to France to Monaco. Her love for her Alma Mater continued even after joining the faculty at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2011. She remained an active member of the Comet familia by joining the SHHS Alumnae Association Board in addition to becoming a member of the Lincoln Heights Dollars for Scholars Board. In appreciation of her constant presence and service to Sacred Heart and the community, she was awarded with the Exemplary Service Award during "Comets Come Back" 2016.

Gym Update

Thank you for your prayers!

Sacred Heart has achieved an important milestone on its road to building a gymnasium. The first meeting at the L.A. City Planning Department (LACPD) in the first week of January was a full house filled with student athletes, Dominican Sisters, alumnae and community members. The meeting went very well and the Hearing Officer will present the documentation to the LACDP and then, will hold a public hearing in March. In early February our Principal, Mr. Saborio, alumnae, and supportive community members attended the Lincoln Heights Historic Preservation Overlay Zones (HPOZ) meeting. This committee  reviews proposed exterior alterations and additions to historic properties within designated districts. We are excited to announce that  they granted approval for the gym!

Our next step is to be present at the City Planning Commission Hearing. Stay tuned to learn more about how you can show your support at future meetings. Thank you to all the Comets who have kept Sacred Heart in your prayers. Veritas!

Mother Maria Pia Backes
Amidst the rapid influx of immigrants in the city of San Francisco in the late 19th century, San Francisco's first Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany, a Dominican priest, wrote to the Dominican Sisters of Holy Cross Convent, Brooklyn, New York calling for sisters to teach the German immigrant children of these newly arriving families. Three young sisters were sent to respond to this call: 24-year old Maria Pia Backes, 17 year-old Amanda Bednartz, and 21 year-old Salesia Fichtner. The sisters arrived in San Francisco on November 11, 1876 to begin the mission of education that would become the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of the Queen of the Holy Rosary (Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose).

Within two weeks the sisters had enrolled 40 diverse immigrant children in their "new" St. Boniface School, the basement of the church! Mother Pia's persistence and faith "In God Alone" led her to found 36 schools and orphanages along the Pacific coast and eventually to spread across U.S. borders into Mexico, Germany, and Switzerland during her lifetime..
Comets Making a Mark in L.A. History

Susanna MacManus '61

We are proud to share that our Alumna, Susanna MacManus '61 was featured in a recent interview on ABC's Vista L.A. The piece focused on famous dishes first created in Los Angeles.

From the ABC 7 website:
"CIELITO LINDO - THE TAQUITO
We visited Susanna MacManus, co-owner of Cielito Lindo, and granddaughter of Aurora Guerrero, the founder and inventor of the taquito. Located on Olvera Street in Los Angeles, Guerrero's daughter used her taquito recipe to open a chain of restaurants in Los Angeles. This family owned business has been carried on by each new generation of Guerrero women. The taquitos, shredded beef rolled in a corn tortilla and fried are made fresh to order, then served drenched in a secret family recipe avocado sauce." For the full story and video

To participate in the empowerment of "Tomorrow's Catholic Woman" today:

Tomorrow's results are created by today's dreamers. Many people dream of a way to leave a legacy that would help Sacred Heart High School grow into the future. Some find that a good way to accomplish this goal is to designate Sacred Heart as the beneficiary of all or part of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. For further information, please contact Rachel Sanchez in the Office of Alumnae and Development at (323) 225-2209.
