The Reno-based Hunter/Jumper professional remains one of the country's most influential and celebrated equestrians.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Reno, Nevada - February 21, 2017  Maplewood Stables Inc.'s owner and head trainer Julie Winkel will continue her impressive leadership roles within equestrian sports in 2017 and beyond. Winkel was re-elected to a second term in this major leadership role with the USEF, equestrian sport's National Governing Body.

"This honor is one of the most prestigious appointments that a professional in our sport could attain, and I feel extremely grateful for the honor and support from our industry professionals," said Winkel.

As one of the preeminent Hunter/Jumper trainers and judges in the country, Winkel also serves in many capacities for the United States Hunter Jumper Association, including the chair of the USHJA Officials Education Committee, as a member of the USHJA Trainer Certification Program and an advisor for the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program.

Winkel owns and operates Maplewood Stables in Reno, which is celebrating its 40th year in business in 2017.  Maplewood offers lessons from the most basic level through the Grand Prix Show Jumping level and features a Summer Riding Camp for kids and a Spring and Fall Riding Camp for adults. In addition, the Maplewood Horse Industry Training Program, a provisionally licensed postsecondary educational institution in Nevada, is one of the only educational programs of its kind in the country and attracts students from throughout North America who seek to become professional horse trainers, riders and equestrian industry leaders.

During the 2016 USHJA Annual Meeting, held December 6 in Palm Springs, California, USHJA President Bill Moroney presented eight President's Distinguished Service Awards. Winkel received one of the coveted trophies, which the president selects annually, and gives to volunteers who go the extra mile for the USHJA.

"As chair of the Officials Education Committee, Julie's passion for educating fellow judges and working to improve the licensed official clinics every year is commendable," said Moroney when presenting Winkel with her award. "Her ideas and forward thinking are exactly what you hope to encounter as a staff member. Without her desire to improve the system, education of our licensed officials would remain stagnant. Her ability to find the time to judge, teach clinics, run her own business, sit on other committees, and review the countless materials being sent to her is to be applauded."

Winkel was thrilled and humbled to receive the award. "It means a lot to be recognized by our president Bill Moroney, who has been a leader in our sport and a visionary in our sport since the USHJA was established in 2004. I have tremendous respect for him and am honored to receive this recognition."

Winkel is also a leader and educator in the Reno community, having established a series of First Responders Horse Handling and Safety Clinics to help educate those on the front lines during emergencies. Winkel also works with area animal services organizations to orchestrate emergency evacuations and to improve communications between the equestrian community and the first responders on the front lines during fires, floods and other emergencies.

Maplewood's next First Responders Horse Handling and Safety Clinic will be held May 23 at Maplewood Stables in Pleasant Valley.
