Boston Ballet's 'Artifact' Opens at Boston Opera House on Feb. 23rd
Witness the Boston Ballet's premiere of world famous choreographer William Forsythe's "Artifact," debuting at the Boston Opera House on Thursday, Feb. 23rd. The show runs through March 5th.
The performance encompasses dancers pushing their physical limits, powerful choreography, and
the spoken words of Eva Crossman-Hecht, music from Bach's C
haconne from Partita Nr.2 BWV 1004 and a sound collage by Forsythe.

General Assembly Hosting 'Diversity in Tech: Stop Talking, Start Taking
Action with Design' on Feb. 23rd
General Assembly (125 Summer St., 13th Floor) is hosting a free event, "Diversity in Tech: Stop Talking, Start Taking Action with Design," on Thursday, Feb. 23rd.

Children's Winter Fest Returns to
Boston Common Feb. 23rd
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department will be bringing the annual Children's Winter Festival to the Boston Common on Thursday, Feb. 23rd.
Among the attractions will be Snowzilla, a three-story high inflatable snow tube slide, a 15-foot tall and 45-foot long Toboggan Tunnel mountainous adventure with twin roller lanes, and a Snow Mazing maze. There will also be a DJ, games, food samples and more. This event is free to attend and will be from 10 am to 3 pm.
This event is in partnership with the Highland Street Foundation, which is also sponsoring a week-long Winter Camp at the Boston Common Frog Pond with free skating and rentals for all ages from Monday, Feb. 20th through Friday, Feb. 24th. Click here for more info. |

Boston Unplugged Live Music
Benefit Concert at Paramount Center
Feb. 25th
ArtsEmerson will host a Boston Unplugged Live Music Benefit Concert on Saturday, Feb. 25th at the Paramount Center. The Boston Unplugged Series provides a platform to Boston's emerging talent with a goal to engage our community to support charitable organizations while sponsoring creative media campaigns.
The concert will be hosted by Tim Hall of Hip Story, with a musical score by DJ Mastermillions, and will feature live music by J Allen, Dye Hard (above), and Amandi Music.
All ticket proceeds will benefit BAMS Prelude programming. BAMS Prelude is a "traveling, live arts and music edutainment series that explores underutilized spaces across Greater Boston, where audiences of color can convene, connect and redefine their shared experiences with all forms of artistic expression."

'Other People's Footage' and
'The Neon Demon'
at
Emerson's
Bright Lights Series;
Screenings Feature Post-Film Talks
Emerson College's Bright Light Series continues with "Other People's Footage: Copyright & Fair Use" on Tuesday, Feb. 21st at the Paramount Center. The documentary "explores three questions crucial to determining fair use exemptions and presents illustrative examples from non-fiction, fiction and experimental films that use pre-existing footage, music and sound from other individuals' creations -- without permission or paying fees." A discussion with directors Dianne Carson and Robert Johnson will follow the screening.
"The Neon Demon" will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 28th. The movie follow aspiring model Jesse (Elle Fanning) as she moves to Los Angeles, and where her life is "devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will use any means necessary" to get what they want. A discussion with Emerson College faculty will follow the screening.
Post-film discussions with special guest filmmakers, faculty and alumni will follow all screenings.
All screenings are free and open to the public and begin at 7 pm. Screenings take place in the Bright Family Screening Room (Paramount Center, 559 Washington St.). Seating is first-come, first-served. Tickets will be available, one per person, starting at 5 pm at the Paramount Center box office on the day of the show. 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane' at Paramount Center Through Feb. 26th
The Tony Award-winning play "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" is live at Emerson College's Paramount Center through Feb. 26th.
"In a small house in the mountains of Ireland, a lonely spinster locks horns with her house-bound manipulative mother in a rage-filled battle of wills."
Written by Martin McDonagh, the Druid Theatre Company is bringing the award-winning play back to America, with Tony Award-winning director Garry Hynes once again leading the production. Actress Marie Mullen, who won a Tony for her portrayal as the daughter, returns in the role of the mother this time.

Celebrate African-American History Month with Freedom Trail
African-American Patriots Tour
The Freedom Trail Foundation is celebrating African-American History Month by offering African-American Patriots Tours throughout February.
Tales of intrigue and bravery, poetry and defiance by black Bostonians unfold during this 90-minute walking tour of the Freedom Trail. Led by a costumed guide, visitors see history through the eyes of African-American revolutionaries such as Crispus Attucks, Phillis Wheatley, Prince Hall, Peter Salem and others.
The tour departs at
12:45 pm on
Saturdays and Sundays from the
Boston Common Visitor Information Center (Tremont Street).

Ice Skating Path and More at Winter Wonderland on
City Hall Plaza
The first-ever Boston Winter wonderland has been a great success on City Hall Plaza and while the holiday market has ended, the ice skating path and urban lodge are in operation through February.

The ice skating path loops around a main stage and marquee Boston sign. There are ice skating lessons at select time and dates, Saturday skating with cartoon characters and a rock 'n skate on Friday nights. Skates are available for rent and you can also bring your own skates. Click here for hours of operation, prices and more info about the skating path.
Some of the other special attractions include the Urban Lodge and some food chalets.

Dean Rev. Streit Retiring After 21 Years of Leading The Cathedral of St. Paul
Dean Rev. John "Jep" Streit, Jr., is retiring after 21 years of leading the congregation of The Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont St.). Streit has led the church through mergers, renovations, good times and bad times -- he will be sorely missed by the community.
When asked to provide some of his proudest or favorite moments during his time at the Cathedral, Streit spoke quickly about how the church hosts Friday Muslim Prayers. Every week about 300 Muslims come to pray at the church. He added that Muslim foot baths were added to the church during major renovations in the last two years.
"I feel really good about that hospitality and we've done a lot of things together in the last 17 years," said Streit. Along with being a welcoming community, the church's congregation and the Muslim community have partnered through the years to serve meals to the homeless during Thanksgiving and other times.
"Our homeless ministry has expanded. We have a weekly writing group with one of the editors from The Atlantic Monthly, who meet each week," said Streit, adding that a monthly magazine The Pilgrim, is produced every month through the group. There is also a weekly meditation group for the homeless.
Sunday was Streit's final sermon, of which he's given several hundred through the years. Asked prior to the sermon what his final sermon would be about, Streit replied he wasn't sure, as he doesn't write them in advance. He added, "I've been a priest for 28 years. I've been in the Greater Boston area basically the whole time. I'd like to thank all the people who have been so gracious and supportive of me at Boston University, in Lexington (where he worked at a parish) and in Boston."
Rev. Nancy E. Gossling has been selected as the full-time acting dean effective Feb. 26. She will serve alongside the current clergy staff as a half-time associate for six weeks prior to her official start date.

Old South Meeting House Participates in
'Day of Facts'
The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) participated in a national Day of Facts campaign on Feb. 17th. Hundreds of museums, libraries, archives, cultural scientific organizations participated in the national campaign to reaffirm that facts matter and all are welcome.
"Old South Meeting House is joining with other museums, libraries and cultural institutions across the nation for a #DayOfFacts, to share a bit of our collective wealth of knowledge. Here at Old South Meeting House we are sharing a few facts about our history as the revolutionary meeting place where the Boston Tea Party began and where many ideals of American democracy were first articulated and put into action, as well as our ongoing commitment to uphold those ideals of freedom of speech and assembly today," said Emily Curran, executive director of the Old South Meeting House. "As a 1729 historic site, museum and active center for public dialogue and free expression in the heart of downtown Boston, we welcome visitors from around the world -- and around the corner -- to discover more and share diverse points of view."

The Coffee Trike is Parked in
Hyatt Regency Boston Lobby for February
The Coffee Trike, a self-contained and mobile, fine coffee tricycle, will be serving drinks in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency Boston (One Avenue de Lafaeytte) throughout February.
The Coffee Trike started rolling around Boston in 2012 and is often situated in Dewey Square. The trike offers a full espresso bar, cold brewed coffee and hot chocolate. The trike offers coffee sourced and roasted by Gracenote Coffee Roasters in Berlin, MA and milk from the cows of Mapleline Farm in Hadley, MA. The Coffee Trike will be in the lobby daily from 6 am to 4 pm. |

30 Federal Street Receives
Facade Upgrade and More
Preotle, Lane & Associates, the owner of 30 Federal St., replaced the first two stories of the 90-year-old building's façade on the exposure overlooking Post Office Square Park. The upgrade created a dramatic, high-performance glass curtain wall and a two-story atrium, and a monumental staircase now links the two stories.
The enhancements were designed and completed in close coordination with Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. to enable Schwab to better serve its clients and accommodate its Boston expansion.
Gensler was the design architect for the base building work, McNamara Salvia, the structural engineer, and Studio NYL of Boulder, Colorado, the consultant for the glass, which was manufactured in Germany by Saint-Gobain. SOM and FRCH provided design services for the Schwab interiors. Columbia Construction Company was the construction manager.

What to
Know About Winter in Boston
Whether you're a property owner, a homeowner or a resident with a car it's important to know about shoveling and parking regulations, snow emergencies and more. The City of Boston has a resourceful webpage providing all necessary info here, and below is important info to know for when the white stuff comes down.
Shoveling Info:

Property owners must:
- Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
- Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines.
Also please remember to:
- Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
- Please clear any snow that may be blocking a handicap ramp, fire hydrant or catch basin.
- Don't leave snow or ice on stairways or fire escapes. All common means of exit must be clear in case of fire or another emergency.
What To Do With Your Car When It Snows:
During a snow emergency main roads need to be clear for plows and emergency vehicles. If you're parked on one of these main roads during a snow emergency, you may be ticketed and your vehicle may be towed.
How do you know if you can't park on a street during a snow emergency? Check the signs posted on the street. Also, here is a map of restricted roads due to a snow emergency.
