January Students of the Month
Byron Jurkouich-2017

Senior, Byron Jurkouich plays Varsity Soccer and is involved in Latin Club.  Byron was Captain of the boys soccer team this past season.  He won the Dale Marsh Award and placed Second Team All-Conference.  Byron is also a Senatus, one of six club officers in the Latin Club.  Outside of school, Byron is involved in club soccer, including futsal in the winter.  He also enjoys hunting when he gets the chance, as well as skiing.  Byron's favorite classes at North have always been his science classes. Chemistry, Biology, and both years of Physics have always intrigued him.  The classes teach you about the world we live in and natural phenomenon that occur every day.  Byron thinks it is quite remarkable how much we appear to know about our environment, but also how much more there is to explore.  His favorite memories at North are his freshman soccer season when the team went undefeated. The team worked hard, performed well on the field, and made lasting bonds.  It was one of his favorite times in high school.  Next year, Byron is planning on majoring in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Cyber Security at either Rutgers, Worchester Polytechnic Institute, NJIT, Stevens Institute, or Clarkson.

Mary-Grace Drwal-2017

Senior, Mary-Grace Drwal has had four memorable years at North Hunterdon.  One of Mary-Grace’s favorite classes was AP Latin.  This was a favorite class because she has always been interested in ancient Greco-Roman culture and the ways in which it has affected us as modern day Americans.  Reading ancient Latin has also provided her with new meaning behind the phrase “lost in translation”, as when they read Vergil in class, they discovered meanings within the structure of the text that could never be discovered by simply reading an English translation of the epic poem.  Two other classes she loved were AP World History and AP U.S. History with Mr. Yocum.  He gave her a new perspective on the ways in which history repeats itself and how this repetition affects us as a nation.  Mary-Grace is a member of Latin Honor Society, National Honor Society, and National English Honor Society.  She attends Saturday Strings Music for Youth program where students play various orchestras.  During her junior year, Mary-Grace worked as a pediatric dental hygienists assistant.  Her favorite memories from North was a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art she took with Mrs. Mullay and other Latin III students.  The trip was very interesting and they were able to see a lot of artwork they had been studying in class.  Next year, Mary-Grace is undecided where she will be attending college, but plans to major in business and minor in either history or the classics.

January Athletes of the Month
Charles Tordik-2017

Charles Tordik is the heavyweight on the wrestling team, which is something he takes great pride in.  Charles started wrestling sophomore year after Coach Flynn approached him asking if he would be interested in wrestling for North.  Charles is a natural leader.  He works extremely hard each day, leads by example, and always has a smile on his face.  Some of Charles' strongest skills are his ability to defend shots that other people take and core off of their shots.  He has a great ability of mat awareness and time so he knows when and where to take his shots.  Charles and the team have been working hard to prepare for the Hunterdon Warren Sussex tournament as well as their meets against teams like Hunterdon Central, Delaware Valley, and Phillipsburg.  In the offseason, Charles wrestles under Coach Billy Cole with the North Hunterdon Wrestling Club.  He plays football in the fall, participates in weight room, and has thrown the shot put for Track & Field in the past.  Charles is also involved in Interact and National Honor Society.  Next year, he will not be wrestling in college so this is his last year on the mat.  Charles will be signing with Bentley University on February 1st to play football.  He will be studying International Business Management.
Olivia Adams-2017

Fencer, Olivia Adams has been fencing since the seventh grade.  Olivia currently fences A strip for the foil squad on North Hunterdon’s fencing team.  She has been a big part of the fencing team since her freshman year.  Olivia’s strongest skills are her ability to be patient and analyze situations quickly.  The team has been improving as the season progresses.  They hope to be at their best for the district tournament at the end of the month, which takes place at North.  Olivia fences outside of school at Machen Academy of Fencing.  She hopes to continue fencing competitively in college.  Olivia is also involved in marching band, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, French Honor Society, and plays the trumpet in the jazz band.  Next year, she plans to study cyber security at either Stevens Institute, RIT, or Northeastern.

TEENS AND DATING: What Parents Need to Know?    Many teens are in dating relationships. But as with everything, there is a danger in dating. Do you know the prevalence of teen dating violence? This program will help to define and understand what teen dating violence looks like, how to recognize the signs and talk with your children. Having a conversation with your child about healthy relationships is one of the most important conversations you can have.
This program will be presented by Monique Pearlman, Director of Adult Client Services at SAFE in Hunterdon on Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00 pm in the North Hunterdon Theater.

Photography Student Showcase
Rae Burach '17

I often think of photography as staged images and candid images. I enjoy staged photographs— regardless of how professionally produced— because they require creativity, effort, and patience. A studio-generated image is unique because you set the scene, and then you photograph that scene. Everything that the viewer of the photograph sees was created by you. It's entirely original. My photograph of the bubble is an example of this. More so, I enjoy candids. The silhouette photograph was taken at the Whitney Museum in New York where each floor had big, floor-to-ceiling windows. A father was kneeling next to his child's stroller looking out at the water; their endearingly innocent conversation about boats caught my ear, then their beautiful silhouette caught my eye. Just as I was about to take the photograph, an elderly woman walked in front of the shot, creating an equally interesting silhouette. I like to think of this image as containing three generations— something I never intended to shoot. It's incredible to capture a precise moment in time that no one has ever seen before, especially when it will likely never happen exactly that way again. When I'm in public with a camera, whether it's on a busy street in Boston or in a crowded supermarket in Clinton, I like to photograph regular people participating in mundane events. What seems ordinary to the eye can become extraordinary through the lens of a camera.

Rae Burach, Class of 2017

Eagle Scout - Robert Fodera '18
Junior, Bobby Fodera became an Eagle Scout on December 28, 2016.  For his Eagle Scout project, Bobby created a community garden at the Round Valley YMCA.  He planned, designed, and managed the construction of 24 garden plots of various sizes, including placement of soil and gravel in the garden and the installation of a sign welcoming gardeners to the "Community Garden".  In order to meet the spring/summer growing season, Bobby met the tight timeline set by the YMCA by leading more than two dozen volunteers in the construction of the 50' x 50' community garden.  Members of the community have adopted individual garden plots to plant a variety of flowers and produce.  Moreover, the YMCA made arrangements for gardeners to donate a portion of their vegetables to local food pantries.
Bobby has earned 68 Merit Badges through his hard work, dedication, and determination.
Congratulations, Bobby!
