Students’ Service to Community
Earns National Recognition

For the sixth straight year, Albion College has been noted for its commitment to promoting civic engagement, volunteerism and service learning.

Earlier this fall, Albion was one of 86 colleges and universities named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its collective 2015 efforts. The program is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Department of Education.

Launched in 2006, the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll acknowledges institutions achieving measurable outcomes in four different categories, including general community service, interfaith community service, economic opportunity and education. In the latest honor roll, Albion was recognized in the general and interfaith categories.

Donors Again Show Their Generosity
On Giving Tuesday

The holiday-season spirit of giving continues to grow for Albion College. On November 29, 333 donors generously gave $113,057.53 to Albion. It’s the fourth straight year the College has participated in the international-day-of-giving event and the third straight year that donors have surpassed the previous year’s total. In 2015, 292 donors gave more than $107,000; that total was 15% higher than the year before, which was double the first-year total in 2013.

"Thank you to our 333 alumni, faculty and friends of the College who celebrated Giving Tuesday by donating more than $113,000 to Albion College," said Sonny Gast, the College's senior engagement officer and coordinator of Giving Tuesday. "We appreciate the generous hearts of our donors and the 11 alumni Giving Tuesday Champions nationwide who encouraged others to take action and support Albion financially."

Commemorating the 75th Anniversary
of Pearl Harbor

Last month, a group of first-year students and history professor Wesley Dick traveled to Washington D.C. as part of their First-Year Seminar, titled A Sense of Place: Albion & the American Dream. While there, seminar students crossed paths with a survivor of the December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. The veteran introduced himself as Adone “Cal” Calderone from Canton, Ohio.

“It was an honor for our class to spend a little time with one of the few Pearl Harbor survivors still with us," Dick writes. "Meeting Cal Calderone, who became a part of history 75 years ago, made history come alive for our Albion College class."

Author Rita Williams-Garcia Closes
Albion's Big Read 2016

Award-winning author Rita Williams-Garcia used personal experiences and her great gift of storytelling to help Albion celebrate the end of its 2016 community Big Read on November 1.

"I've never seen any program quite like this, and I spend a great deal of time meeting with young people and talking to literacy programs," Williams-Garcia said, referring to the 18 middle and high school students who were the core book discussion leaders for this year's book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Hundreds of community members, along with Albion College faculty, staff and students, participated in dozens of events and several book discussions centered on Fahrenheit 451.
