| Revamped Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center
Passes First Test
 Earlier this month, the new Randi C. Heathman Indoor Arena got its first test and everybody loves the facilities, said Danielle Menteer, director of the Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center.
The arena was unveiled at Homecoming during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. In time, the center aims to become one of the premier equestrian facilities in the country.
For the arena's namesake, Randi Heathman, 03, the project served as an opportunity to return to Albion College after a few years of working as an equestrian consultant. She's looking to enhance the future and reputation of Albions equestrian program.
We have an opportunity right now that no other equestrian program gets. And we get a chance to reinvent ourselves. Were telling students that if you come to Albion, youll have a high-level academic experience and we have a strong riding program. Hopefully, well have a national riding program. Were establishing a firm sense of who we are and doing that well," says Heathman.

 Alumni Referral Program: A Success Story
 For as long as she can remember, Karen (Pugh) Kline, 83 was immersed in all things Albion. She grew up in a family where stories of formal dances and band concerts were shared around the dinner table, and her son now makes up the third generation to march with the British Eighth. Its no wonder that Karen describes Albion College as a part of the fabric of her family.
Karens ties to Albion dont just end with memories, or of watching her son march in the band at football games. Just as Albion is an important part of her life, she too is an important part of Albion. Karen serves on the Parent Leadership Council and is highly involved as an Admission Ambassador. My involvement with Albion as an alumna is not dissimilar to being a good hostess in my home, Karen said. I want others to be able to share the Albion College experience, feel welcome in the community and of course, get a great education and launch into the world!
Karen has also participated in the College's Referral Program, a platform for alumni to identify potential Albion students. The Referral Program allows the Admission Staff to introduce Albion College to those students that I know would be a perfect fit, Karen said. This is a great way for me to share Albion College with some wonderful high school students in a way that is natural and comfortable.
Early Action admission applications are due on December 1, and you can help us stay busy over the Holidays by referring high school seniors before that date as well!

Drew Hasley, 07, is a One-of-a-Kind Geneticist
 Drew Hasley, 07, became the first legally blind person with a University of Wisconsin-Madison doctorate in geneticsand possibly only the second blind UW-Madison Ph.D. in the biological sciences. As a child, Drew was diagnosed with Leber congenital amaurosis, a mutation that has destroyed most of his retinas.
While a student at Albion College, Drew was selected for his first biology research job based on the difficulty of his questions in class. From this job, Drew developed an interest in genetics and applied to six graduate programs and was accepted at three.
Last summer, Drew defended his dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He defended his research by giving one of the best talks of my lifetime, says Ahna Skop, an associate professor of genetics and member of his thesis committee at UW. I was truly humbled and in awe of all of the hurdles it took to get to this moment.
I liked science and started out as a total astronomy nerd, Drew says. But the next generation of science students who are disabled should not have to be as passionate about science as I was. They should be able, like their peers, to dip a toe in and have fun.
Drew is determined to build on his record of success so there are more people like me.
