Who Are You? Series: "Live With Integrity"

The beginning of a new calendar year is a time when we often reassess direction and ask questions yet again about who we are and where we are going in life. We make resolutions, we sign up at the gym (again), we vow to be better people. This year we will take a deep journey into the question, "Who Are You?" We will discover that "who we are" is indelibly linked to "Whose we are." This Sunday we talk about being "salt and light" in the world.

This Sunday is Communion Sunday. We will celebrate Holy Communion in all worship services. The Communion Offering will go to Refugee Response through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). This fund supports initiatives that assist refugees, immigrants, and internally displaced persons. If you would like to give to this offering, indicate "Refugee Relief" on the memo of your gift and bring it with you to the altar during communion. You may also place it in the offering plate or give online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/give.

Too Busy Not to Pray is a four-week study by Bill Hybels. In this study, you will learn how to become a person of prayer. As Hybels suggests, one  does not need to return to school or begin a new diet to learn how to pray. You can be the person you currently are to learn the power of prayer. If you desire to talk to and listen to God, this class is for you. Classes will be Thursday evenings, February 2-23, from 6 to 7:30 PM in the Family Life Center Room 2011. If you are interested in signing up for this study and/or desire additional information, please contact Sandra Nasr, [email protected] or Charles Demack, [email protected].

Church News

Thank you for your support of our Youth Mariachi Band through their Sonic fundraiser last Sunday! About $2,400 was raised... enough to pay for their music lessons all year! We realized after the fact that one of the packages of cards had an expiration date of 12/31/2016. Please check your cards. If you received expired ones, you may exchange them for a replacement. The Mariachi parents will be available with the replacement cards in the foyer and Family Life Center this Sunday. Please note that our local Grapevine Sonic has said that they would honor the expired cards, but they cannot speak for other locations. Questions? Contact Rev. Armando Alvarado ([email protected]).

First United Methodist Church of Grapevine has the incredible privilege of addressing the needs of those in the community with our benevolence fund as we have funds available. Some of you may have had occasion to meet individuals and families on Sunday mornings who come to us in need of assistance. If you encounter someone with a benevolence need, please connect them with a staff member who can assist them regarding our process of offering benevolence. Our church also wanted to take this opportunity to make you aware of our process. We ask those in need of assistance to go to GRACE (our local relief agency) first. They have the resources to best assess a person's need and then refer them to the organization that can best address their needs. Based on GRACE's assessment, they will determine individuals and families who have specific needs in which we can potentially assist. We meet with the referrals from GRACE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 to 5 PM in the church office. Should you have a question, please contact Business Administrator Marcus Bellamy ( [email protected] or 817-481-2559 x123).

Our Pastor's Bible Study continues with Rev. Jenn Pick leading a study of  the book of 1 Thessalonians  through the month of February. It is the first existing letter that we have from Paul.  Paul has shaped much of modern Christianity with his advice to early Christ-followers about how to be in relationship with each other and with Christ.  He answers questions in this letter about what to do when competing voices ask for allegiance and how to live a life that is pleasing to God.  These questions are still being asked by modern Christians.  Join us on Mondays (skipping President's Day, February 20) at 6 PM in Leach Hall as we become one of the groups who enters into a dialogue with Paul and the people of Thessalonica as we search for ancient wisdom for today's questions.
