Amherst Police Explore Ways to Curb Partying Through 'Environmental Changes' to Property
Daily Hampshire Gazette, by Scott Merzbach
Amherst Police, meet landscape architecture. Police in recent months have turned to the concepts of environ-mental design-installing or removing fences and vegeta-tion, enhancing lighting and improving security-in hopes of cutting down on partying hotspots in town. "This is about how to reduce crime through subtle or significant changes to the environment," said William Laramee, the Amherst Police neighborhood liaison officer. One popular partying spot is at Townehouse Apartments where large, grassy areas well hidden from the public roads and have proven to be ideal spots for college-aged people to hold large-scale parties. Police hope to address these and other sites in town through a strategy known as community policing through environ-mental design, or CPTED. Amherst Police are partnering with the University of Massachusetts Amherst to study the concept at key locations in town.
Best College Destinations Offer Diversity, Access, and City Lifestyles
AIER, by Staff Writers
Quality of Life and demographics play a stronger role in the top rankings for the metro areas in this year's AIER CDI. This is true for metro areas with a population of 1 million or more. In contrast, economic climate plays a more important role in our rankings for metro areas with populations under 1 million. To capture quality of life, we measure the presence of arts and entertainment venues and of bars and restaurants, as well as commuter use of public transit, bicycles, walking and other alternatives to the car. To capture the economic climate, we measure the youth unemployment rate, labor force participation of the working-age population, the presence of workers in science, technology, medical and engineering fields, and rent. Our demo-graphic measures reflect what matters most to young adults, racial and ethnic diversity, and the share of the adult population with at least a BA.
City, Atlanta University Center Partner for Student Safety
AJC.com, by Shelagh MaRee Hardrich
The Atlanta University Center Consortium Council of Presidents and Mayor Kasim Reed announced the com-pletion of a collaborative surveillance program that stra-tegically places video cameras and license plate readers around the campus community to create a safer envi-ronment. Working through the University Community Development Corp., a community development arm of the AUC, Presidents John Wilson, Ronald Johnson, Valerie Montgomery Rice, and Mary Schmidt Campbell have forged a partnership with the Atlanta Police Foundation and the Atlanta Police Department to install 35 cameras and five license plate readers around the AUC community. The cameras are monitored by AUC police at their respective schools and APD's video integration center. Each institution, paying equal amounts, and the mayor's office contributing the remaining balance, funded the $700,000 project.
Maryland 'Dream Team' Builds Community Through Basketball: BTN LiveBIG
BTN, by John Tolley
A group of kids gathers for a game of basketball at a community center in College Park, Maryland. There's the usual crowd of cheering parents but this isn't just any game. These children are members of the College Park Dream Team, and their teammates are members of local law enforcement agencies. "The event we have is a friendly game with the youth in the community, the uni-versity police, Prince George's police department and the park police," says Gloria Aparicio, director of the University of Maryland's Office of Communi-ty Engagement. "We're building communities, building relationships [and] building goodwill."  The Dream Team's quarterly hoops games got underway in 2012. Aparicio had been brainstorming ideas for how the university, local communities and local police could strengthen their ties. A suggestion by the university Police Chief David Mitchell led her to arrive at basketball.
Chamber Turns Attention to Making City a College Town
Times Record News, by John Ingle
"There are sorts of talk going on right now between chamber staff and leadership at MSU and city hall about how we get MSU more connected with the business community," said chamber President and CEO Henry Florsheim. Discussions began to determine what that effort would entail; what role the chamber, MSU and other play; and what kind of support would be needed. Ann Arnold-Ogden, community marketing director at the chamber, said it was decided that she would visit other college towns to see what they were doing to be college towns. Stops included Waco, Belton, Georgetown, Denton and San Marcos. Arnold-Ogden said a common thing in most of the five places is a private enterprise. Arnold-Ogden is working on a plan to get Wichita falls at that college-town level, the first measure is to get banners made and put on light poles around town showing support for MSU.
