The Nile Project

The Nile Project, a cross-cultural collaboration that brings artists from 11 Nile countries together for a musical celebration of Nile identity, will perform at Luther at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Part environmental awareness initiative, part musical collaboration, the 35-member collective comes together from 11 different East African countries to create a unified sound while maintaining each country's unique culture and musical tradition. Featuring three festival bands and 625 high school musicians from 105 high schools, Luther College's annual Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, February 27 in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. The concert's festival bands include a Symphonic Band (an auditioned group of about 75 students), and the Sperati and Noble Bands — both consisting of 250 high school students.

G Yamazawa, widely considered one of the top spoken word artists in the country, is performing at 9 p.m. Friday, February 24, in Marty's.
Tickets for the event, sponsored by SAC Spotlight, are free with CAF or $5 at the door. Yamazawa has performed across the globe, and is known for his evocative performances on YouTube, where he lyrically critiques disunity and racism he knew growing up as a Japanese-American in the south.

The community is invited to celebrate the many cultures that come together in the name of education through the Luther College Diversity Center's annual Ethnic Arts Festival on Saturday, February 25. The festival includes a Country Fair from 2-5 p.m. in the CFA Atrium. Hors d'oeuvres will available for purchase throughout the atrium at the event. There will also be performances representing different cultures at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall.

Luther is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation with "The Reformation of Everything," a series of events throughout 2017, and extends an invitation to the upcoming conference, Liberating Grace: The Power of Reformation in the World Today, Friday and Saturday, March 31-April 1. The conference features keynote speakers The Reverend Nadia Bolz-Weber, and Ralston Deffenbaugh. Register for the conference online or via the Ticket Office.
The Great Paideia Owl Hunt. Are you a first-year scholar hard at work on your Paideia research paper? Use the library, follow a couple of clues, and you could discover one of many adorable plush owls (yours to keep!) handmade by the students in Norse Knitters. Clues will be posted on the Preus Library Facebook and Instagram. This hunt made possible by the Library and Norse Knitters.

SAC Cinema presents
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on Thursday, February 23 in Valders 206. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. This event is free with CAF or $5 without. We will have free popcorn while supplies last.

Rachel Brandwein, adjunct faculty in music, and Carol Hester, Luther College professor of music, will perform a faculty flute and harp recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, in the NRH. Luther Professor of Music Spencer Martin, viola, will perform alongside Brandwein and Hester on Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp. The program includes works by Debussy, Hovhaness, Rachel Brandwein and others.

Call for Proposals: Iowa College Foundation McElroy Trust Student/Faculty Research Projects for 2017-18. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in fall of 2017. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student, or team of students, and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award: $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals: April 12. Forms available in the Dean’s Office (Union 262) or email brandtja@luther.edu.

The art of sophomores Ryan Koning and Joseph Cowan has been selected to be featured in Lanesboro Arts' annual Emerging Artist Exhibition. The show opens with an artist reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, February 25, and the exhibition runs through March 19. Open to the public with no charge for admission, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minn., with gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
