  Racing the Devil
England, 1920, during a heavy rainstorm, a driver loses control on a twisting road and is killed in the crash. Was it an accident due to the hazardous conditions? Or premeditated murder? Is the crash connected in some way to unfortunate events in the mountains above Nice the year before? The dead driver wasn't in France -although the motorcar he drove was. If it was foul play, was it a case of mistaken identity? Or was the dead man the intended victim after all? HC 1st Printing, Signed: 26.99

Book Reviews
Racing the Devil
By Charles Todd
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
In this nineteenth Ian Rutledge Mystery series, the Scotland Yard inspector faces a tangle of old grievances, secrets, and revenge leading back to World War I.
In 1916, pact is made by some English Officers vowing to meet in Paris and race their motorcars in celebration a year after the end of the war.  But that reunion is marred by an accident and one man is critically injured.
In England in 1920, a driver is killed in a crash on a winding road. Did weather cause the accident or was it murder? The driver hadn't been in France, but the car he drove was. Was he the victim of mistaken identity, or was he the target?
Assigned to investigate, Ian Rutledge searches for the truth, finding the people of the villages surrounding the accident scene are determined to keep secrets. Meanwhile, the killer is willing to stop at nothing, even the killing of a child, to avoid detection.
The mother and son writing team known as Charles Todd has created a suspenseful series which takes this reader back in time to a wonderfully described England of the early 20th century. The characters fairly rise off the page. Inspector Ian Rutledge faces his own challenges. He is haunted by the "ghost" of the man he ordered executed for treason. Damaged himself, Rutledge investigates to set right wrongs to atone for the one he cannot undo himself. Rutledge and the characters he encounters are well and sympathetically drawn. The suspense inexorably builds and the solution, when it comes, makes perfect sense. All in all, a most enjoyable read. The reader can read and enjoy Racing the Devil without having read any of the earlier books in the series, though, like me, you may well be hooked and want to read them all. Highly recommended. HC $26.99.

Little Deaths
By Emma Flint
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Ruth Malone's two young children are missing, kidnapped from their bedroom in the middle of the night.  Ruth discovers the disappearance in the morning when she opens their locked bedroom door to start the morning routine.  She summons her ex-husband Frank and together they report the disappearance to the police.  Unfortunately, the children's dead bodies are discovered during the next several days.
If the plot sounds familiar, it is because this debut novel is based on a true crime that occurred in 1965 in Queens, NYC.  Readers may recall the Alice Crimmins case.  Using the basic facts of the case, Ms. Flint constructs a narrative that expertly combines a police procedural with a thriller.
Even before the bodies are discovered, the police decide that Ruth Malone is the prime suspect.  Her real crime is a promiscuous lifestyle, despite the fact that she is a wonderful and caring mother to her children.  Bad habits combined with poor judgement are what the world sees.  Ruth does not hide who she is.  Her character is haunting and memorable.  Pre-judged by all, she does not stand a chance for a fair trial in or out of the courtroom.
Little Deaths is a one-sitting read.  The characters are strong, the story moves along a tight procedural track, and the 1960's NYC middle class setting is perfect.  Very unique and a MUST READ.

Garden of Lamentations
By Deborah Crombie
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
Reagan Keating has been murdered in a Notting Hill private garden, and the lead detective in the case seeks Gemma James' help in the investigation. Gemma has a personal interest in the case; Reagan was nanny to a child who attends the same dance studio as Gemma's and Kincaid's children.
While Gemma is working her new case, Kincaid is plagued by disturbing questions about previous cases involving members of the force. If the crimes are linked, are his family and friends in mortal danger? There's a traitor in the ranks. Can Kincaid trust anyone?
I have read and enjoyed each one of her books, and Garden of Lamentations fulfills every expectation I have of Deborah Crombie's excellent series. The characters feel true-to-life and the description of setting sings without being obtrusive.  The side-by-side crime solving works extremely well. I am awed by the manner in which Crombie conveys the family's concerns, making the reader feel a part of this very real-seeming household. All the while, the suspense builds as Gemma and Kincaid strive to solve their cases. I found Garden of Lamentations "un-put-down-able," and I am sure many readers will feel the same. Highly recommended. HC 26.99
