Thank you to the teen volunteers of the National Charity League, SFV who lovingly made and assembled these personalized favors.

In recognition of this dedication and support we will present to them the "Share the Care Award." at our 2017 Annual Spring Gala.

OSEC Senior Story of the Month

About 15 years ago Joseph Siracusa heard about ONEgeneration when a group of his friends heard about a dance class that was offered at the center and decided to try it. Since then Joe has been an active member at ONEgeneration. Before starting the dance class at the center, Joe had quite an interesting life.
When Joe was in High School he was in band class and learned how to play many instruments but his favorite was the drums. Out of high school he joined the Army during WWII and his job was to entertain the soldiers by playing the drums in a band. After he got out of the service he continued to play the drums for Spike Jones. After his third child was born Joe decided to move into the movie animation business as a supervising film editor. However, music has always been a very important part of his life as he continues to incorporate it into his life.

When Joe is not at the dance class at ONEgeneration he is either at Bible Study, playing music at the Jewish Home for aging or taking care of his son. Joe has so many stories to share about his amazing and entertaining life so please stop by and ask him to tell you some stories!

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner -
Dementia and Alzheimer's

This will be the final installment that deals dementia disorder. As I've said, dementia is defined  by significant loss of memory, along with losses such as the ability to reason or to plan. These losses interfere with successful functioning at home and at work. Most dementias are associated with a range of neuropsychiatric and behavioral disturbances. Behavior and mood changes are common. In as many as many as 80% to 90% of demented people, initial personality alterations include irritability, anxiety, agitation, depression or apathy. As the disease progresses, aggression, wandering, delusions and hallucinations may develop.

These problems are potentially treatable. First, the doctor must check to rule out treatable causes of behavioral change such as urinary tract infection or pneumonia, pain, or constipation.   Once that has been done, there are a number of possible approaches the doctor can use. I  start by recommending treatment without medication. Demonstration of warmth  and affection through hand holding, playing familiar comforting music, providing candies,
lighting of scented candles, all may be of value. If not, if medication is necessary, there are  choices. Medications may include antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, pain relievers,  mood altering agents, medication to treat inappropriate laughing or crying. As a last resort, we  can use anti-psychotic agents.

Next month, I will begin to discuss other subjects related to aging. Let me know if you would  like a particular subject reviewed.

Dr. Stern

Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program.  He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care.  If you have ideas for a future article topics please contact ONEgeneration.  Dr. Stern is available as needed for consultation on medical concerns .

Welcome UCLA Students!
Every year we are joined by a group of students from the Gerontology Service Learning course.  This year our Adult Daycare is joined by 32 students from this program.  In addition to having the opportunity to socialize with seniors suffering from dementia, they will also have the opportunity to lead small group activities related to their own interests as seen in the pictures above.  In the first week of this program several of these students have already jumped in and held art sessions, led a group of poker players and helped in our Intergenerational Programs.  We look forward to the enthusiasm and compassion that these wonderful students from UCLA will bring to our Adult Daycare.

Every year, ONEgeneration celebrates deserving accomplishments at our annual Enriching Lives Gala and on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Skirball Cultural Center , we are excited to be doing so once again!

We will present the "Enriching Lives Award" to Allan Cutrow and Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP in recognition of Allan's personal dedication to civic engagement, to the non-profit sector, and the firm's 108 year history and commitment to philanthropy.

To acknowledge the leadership and the support he provides to non-profit organizations in the San Fernando Valley and applaud his role in CRESA's corporate philanthropy, ONEgeneration will present the "Leadership Award" to Rick Pearson and CRESA.

For more than 20 years, the National Charity League, San Fernando Valley Chapter, has donated thousands of volunteer hours and tens of thousands of dollars to ONEgeneration. In recognition of this dedication and support we will present to them the "Share the Care Award."

Senior Enrichment Center January Highlights

ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center
Class of the Month: Water Color for Beginners
Water color for beginners is a great class for those who are looking for something new and exciting to start doing. At the beginning of the class the members look over and critique the previous weeks paintings. After that it is time to get to work! Everyone sits down and takes out their supplies while they wait for the instructor Cristina to show them which painting they will be doing. Water coloring is a great way to learn a new hobby and a chance to paint beautiful paintings to showcase in your home.

Cardiac Mobile Diagnostics Inc.

On Tuesday January 10 th, ONEgeneration hosted a free Ultrasound Leg health screening at the Senior Enrichment Center by  Cardiac Mobile Diagnostics Inc. The screening looked at the leg's relationship to the cardiovascular system.  Many seniors came in to check if they suffered from venous or arterial insufficiency. The very friendly sonographers used ultrasounds to screen the legs of the seniors to see if any issues were present. This event was a success as many seniors were able to be complete the screening and receive valuable feedback.

Helpful information from the
ONEgeneration Childcare Program

 Did You Know?
W sitting increases the risk of the child's hip and leg muscles becoming short and tight - this can then negatively affect their coordination, balance, and the development of gross motor skills down the road
 W sitting can increase a child's risk of hip dislocation - especially those who already have hip dysplasia (which may not be formally diagnosed)
 When sitting in the W position, kids are unable to rotate their upper body
 Makes it difficult for the child to reach across the body and perform tasks that involve using both hands together or crossing their arm over from one side to the other
 This will later affect their ability to perform writing skills and other table-top activities that are important in school
 W Sitting hinders the development of a hand preference
 The child is only able to use objects on the right side of the body with the right hand and those on the left side of the body with the left hand - this could lead to coordination difficulties later in life
 W sitting makes it difficult for the child to shift their weight from one side of their body to the other
 The ability to shift weight from one side of the body to the other is especially important in standing bal-ance and when developing the ability to run and jump
 W sitting does not allow the child to develop strong trunk muscles
 In this position, the child's trunk muscles do not have to work as hard to keep them upright - instead they are relying on the wide base of support of their legs and joint structures to keep them upright

Child Care News from the Past Month:

As part of their community project, a group of students from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in Family Studies at California State University, Northridge was given a tour of the ONEgeneration Day Care campus by Director, Dr. Kristine Vardanyan.

We had a successful Open House on Saturday, January 27th.  Many in attendance were there due to positive referrals from the parents of our children.  We are so appreciative of all the wonderful Word of Mouth recommendations.

To schedule a tour please email childcare@onegeneration.org
