The Woodlawn News

January with its warm weather has flown by and February is upon us. Our days are busy as we plan activities for 2017.  There are returning favorites, like the antiques show and some new programs and events in the works.

With the early snow in February, we are keeping our fingers crossed for the City of Ellsworth's Winter Carnival which is scheduled on Saturday, February 11th.  Woodlawn is pleased to play host for a number of the activities.  Visit the City of Ellsworth's website for details.

We invite you to share this newsletter with family and friends. The newsletter is published for the community and can be accessed by clicking below.
A Woodlawn Love Story for Valentines Day

Many of us have head strong teens in our family and the same can be said for John and Mary Black.  Their daughter, Mary Ann found herself in love at age 17 to a man in his 30's.  If this was not enough to cause her parents worry.....her Mr. Jarvis was also a business adversary of her Dad's.

Her hand written letter, pleading with her father is in our archives, and is included on our audio tour.  Needless to say, it is a visitor's favorite.  Mary Ann's letter is used in the Woodlawn School Program with 7th grade students.
Woodlawn Director on National Planning Team

Woodlawn's executive director, Joshua Campbell Torrance, recently traveled to Austin, Texas to participate in the planning of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) 2017 annual meeting being held in Austin, September 6-9, 2017.  Read more on the web with a click here.

With the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York City coming right up on February 11, we thought you might enjoy seeing this photo of George Nixon Black, Jr. with his award winning St. Bernard, Hub King.

Hub's pedigree papers and a medal awarded by the New England Kennel Club are also shown.  For dog (and history) lovers, here are two links with references to the New England Kennel Club: New England Kennel Club and Library of Congress
