North Jersey Towns Work to Hold on to Older Residents

The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, of Teaneck, and the Grotta Fund for Senior Care, of Whippany, began giving out grants of up to $35,000 for organizations to study the needs of the elderly in their communities. In Bergen County, where five organizations--in Ridgewood, Englewood, Teaneck, Garfield and Westwood--got grants, the groups learned that older residents are worried about how they'll be able to afford to stay in their homes


Meadowlands Mayors Ask State to Fund Tax-Sharing Shortfall

The group of mayors in the Meadowlands district are calling on the state to adhere to the law and fund the outstanding balance owned to six Meadowlands towns through the 2016 tax-sharing program. The mayors are also requesting that the Senate perform an audit of the hotel occupancy tax intended to fund the program, due to its being short twice since its creation in 2015.

Hispanic Homeownership Rate Surged in 2016

The homeownership rate for Hispanics increased in 2016, contrary to other ethnic groups, who all saw a decrease in homeownership. The homeownership rate among Hispanics increased to 46% in 2016, up from 45.6% the year before, according to a report from the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals.

Feel-Good Outlook for Incomes-and Housing

Americans are seeing a bright spot in their paychecks, and their housing prospects. The share of those surveyed in Fannie Mae's recent Home Purchase Sentiment Index® (HPSI) who reported "significantly higher household income" in 2016 increased five points to 15 percent in January, while the share of those who reported it is "a good time to sell" a house increased two points, also to 15 percent.


Over 1 Million Properties Shed Underwater Status in 2016

According to ATTOM Data Solutions' Year-End 2016 U.S., Home Equity & Underwater Report, the amount of "seriously" underwater properties in the U.S. decreased by over one million last year, while the amount of "equity rich" properties increased by 1.3 million. Seriously underwater is defined as a property with a loan-to-value ratio 25 percent or more of its fair market value.

Supreme Court To Hear Property Rights Case

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to hear oral argument in an important property righst case, Murr v. State of Wisconsin, on March 20, 2017. The Murr case, for which NAR submitted an Amicus Brief, arises from a Wisconsin's family's attempt to sell or develop a small river-front plot of land which they acquired in 1963 for investment purposes.
