February 2017
Photo of the Month

The February Photo of the Month shows one of the friendliest cows on the farm, Melody, licking Brady Hansen as he feeds her calf. Melody's calf was breech that morning, so she is showing her appreciation for his help! Brady is feeding the calf Melody's colostrum, which is the first milk a mammal produces after giving birth. This substance is rich in antibodies and kick-starts the baby's immune system. We milk the cow by machine into a bucket, then feed the calf the mom's colostrum by bottle to ensure that the baby is getting the maximum amount. If the baby is left to nurse on the mom, we don't know if they are successful in getting all the nutrients they need as soon as possible.  We want all our calves to get a good start in life!

Cash Cow

There was one $5 winner in our CA$H COW contest last month -- Bonnie McConnell of Waterloo! No one found the one jug labeled with $100 in January, so this month there will be two $100 jugs out there. Best chance to find it is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

Keep Hansen's butter fresh - and fashionable
Our new Hansen's butter keepers are in stock!

The butter keepers work by creating an airtight seal of water at the base of the crock. The butter stays fresh and spreadable without refrigeration.

Simply pour 1/3 cup cold water into the butter keeper base. Pack 1/2 cup softened butter firmly into the cup of the lid. Place lid into the bottom of the butter keeper, and the water creates a seal. For best results, replace water every day.

Pick up one of these handy crocks, which feature our new logo, at any Hansen's Dairy store.

Customer of the Month
The Hansel family
The February Customer of the Month is Jennie Hansel of Cedar Falls.

Jennie always buys Hansen's Dairy products because of a health scare involving herself and her son.

"When my middle son was 10 days old, I had a pulmonary embolism and almost died," Jennie said. "I was unable to nurse him because of the medicine I had to take to dissolve the blood clot. Evan could not keep down any formulas or any varieties of milk -- trust me, we tried everything. He was losing weight from not keeping anything down."

One day they heard about Hansen's milk, so they decided to give that a try.

"From then on the ONLY thing that he could drink was Hansen's Dairy whole milk, and he kept it down every time. He began to maintain a healthy weight and started to sleep!"

We get a lot of feedback from people who say they're lactose intolerant but can drink our milk. Jennie believes that the whole milk was gentle on her son's tummy because it's so fresh and also non-homogenized. While the milk is pasteurized at 165 degrees for 15 seconds, it's not homogenized, which breaks up the fat globules of milk so that the particles are uniformly sized. We choose not to homogenize to keep the milk in its natural state, which may be why it's more easily digestible.

"Hansen's whole milk saved my son, who is thriving today at 8 1/2. This is the only milk, butter and ice cream we will ever buy," Jennie said. "I wish for the day it would be served in every school. All our kids should be healthy Hansen Dairy kids!"

Thanks, Jennie! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and hands-on tour passes to visit the farm. Submit your entries at each of our stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. You could also be selected from your comments on Facebook.
Cow of the Month
The February Cow of the Month is, appropriately, Lovebug . She not only has the perfect name for this month, but she is also currently producing the most milk at 15 gallons a day! In two years she has given us 60,000 pounds of milk and 1,270 pounds of butterfat. That's a lot of butter and ice cream!

Lovebug is 4 1/2 years old and has had three calves in her lifetime: two bulls and a heifer named Loveboat.

Happy Valentine's Day from Lovebug, who's a real sweetheart in our herd!

Recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
Super Bowl snacks are notoriously not good for you. Maybe you could sneak some of these mini bagels in the mix for a healthy choice!

Mini Veggie and Cheese Bagels
Starred ingredients are available at
Hansen's Dairy stores.

INGREDIENTS
  • 8 mini bagels
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
    (4 ounces)*
  • 1 cup shredded Provolone cheese
    (4 ounces)
  • 6 ounces frozen chopped spinach, thawed
  • ¾ cup shredded carrots
  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • Dash pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chopped pimiento, drained
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375° F. Split bagels in half horizontally. With a serrated grapefruit spoon or knife, hollow out some of the bread, saving crumbs for another recipe. Press spinach between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Combine cheeses, spinach, carrots, onion, salt and pepper. Spread 2 heaping tablespoons mixture on each bagel half. Sprinkle with chopped pimiento. Place bagel halves on a baking sheet. Bake until cheese melts and edges are lightly toasted, about 8 to 10 minutes.
