February Family Day  CAM

Join Cranbrook Art Museum educators for a February Family Day of Valentine making, inspired by the objects and eras in our current exhibition, Cranbrook Time Machine: Twentieth-Century Period Rooms. From sleek mid-century modernism to ornate natural history, we'll have lots of materials on hand to make a heap of hearts to keep or send. Also, take a peek at some historic valentines from the Cranbrook Archives and participate in "Hearts for Art," by selecting an artwork you LOVE! All ages are welcome and activities are free with Museum admission. Children 12 and under are always free. 
The Truth Is I Hear You

In the summer of 2016, The Cause Collective brought their Truth Booth, an inflatable video recording studio in the shape of a giant speech bubble, to tour several neighborhoods in Detroit and Flint. Come see the recordings from the tour presented as a 60-foot-wide video installation intended to expand our understanding of what our community defines as real, authentic, valuable or true.

Cranbrook Time Machine: Twentieth-Century Period Rooms

Drawing its inspiration from traditional museum period rooms, this exhibition reinvents that presentation model by featuring distinct spaces that examine key moments in Cranbrook's history. The evolution of the domestic landscape is chronicled by showcasing works from our collections.

Eero Saarinen Collection Wing Tours

In celebration of the new American Masters - Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future documentary that premiered on PBS in December, Cranbrook Art Museum's weekly Collections Wing tour is featuring the work of Eero Saarinen through February. .

Winter Greenhouse Sale  CHG

Come in from the cold and explore the Conservatory Greenhouse during our Winter Greenhouse Sale! Plants available for purchase include: Begonias, bromeliads, cacti, dish gardens, ferns, jade plants, orchids, and succulents. Enjoy demonstrations daily at 11:00 am and sample a selection of locally made honeys and jams from our Thistle Gift Shop.

Overture to Opera at the Manor

Experience an evening of opera at Cranbrook House when Michigan Opera Theatre presents music from its spring schedule. The artists will take you on a lyrical journey that transforms the library into the set of The Girl of the Golden West and Cyrano.  

Tutankhamun: "Wonderful Things" From The Pharaoh's Tomb

Ten years in the making from the artisans of the Pharaonic Village in Egypt, "Wonderful Things" recreates the legendary contents of the richest archaeological find of all time - the treasures of King Tutankhamun's tomb. More than 100 meticulously created replicas of the pharaoh's sacred and personal possessions, along with associated artifacts from the period surrounding Tutankhamun's reign, reconstruct both the life and times of Egypt's celebrated boy king, and the historic discovery of the tomb by Howard Carter.

Courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation admission to the Institute of Science is FREE after 5:00 pm the first Friday of every month through June 2017. Observatory and CafĂ© will be open. Tutankhamun exhibit and planetarium shows available at additional charge.    

Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan Offer Kaleidoscope of Science Fun

Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to spend a special evening exploring science at the Institute. Open to all Girl Scouts, siblings, and their families, Kaleidoscope of Science offers special tabletop activities and workshops, and interactive physics shows. Each Scout receives a patch, gift, and access to special activities. Preregistration is required..  

CIS After Dark: Love After Dark

Discover the clothing and accessories from around the world that signal desire and commitment, explore the ins and outs of prehistoric sex, play the role of cupid as you aim for your targets; these experiences and many more await during this 21+ event exploring the science of love.

Happy Birthday Charles Darwin
Sunday, February 12 | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Celebrate Charles Darwin's 208th birthday at the Institute of Science with a variety of hands-on activities centered on Darwin's work. Manipulate DNA using kits provided through Cranbrook's partnership with the Edgerton Center at MIT, build a beast of your own creation, and learn how camouflage can play a major role in evolution. As icing on the birthday cake, the Institute will also display its first edition On the Origin of Species.

Living Legacy Series Event

Join President Dominic DiMarco for a presentation of the Living Legacy Series. This is a special occasion to thank our Legacy Society members, as well as those who are committed supporters of Cranbrook, and to learn more about the innovation and creativity taking place in all of our Program Areas. You are also welcome to enjoy an optional tour of the Tutankhamun exhibition at the conclusion of the remarks.

Young Scientists Program Inspires Creativity
Thursdays through March 2017

Families with children ages 2 through 7 are invited to explore the wonders of the natural world with other Young Scientists to investigate a different topic each week. Every session encourages participants to question, investigate, and learn. Pre-registration is required.   

43rd Annual Maple Festival
Sunday, March 12 | 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Immerse yourself in all things related to the maple sugaring process, what Native Americans called sinzibukwud. Taste maple-themed snacks, learn about the science of maple syrup production, and listen to the story of sugaring in Colonial North America. Craft stations, hands-on table top activities, and self-guided walks to the Sugarin' Hut will also be available.

Register Now for Summer Camp

Summer camp at Cranbrook Institute of Science gives campers from Kindergarten through Grade 9 the opportunity to experience science both indoors in the museum and outdoors on Cranbrook's 319-acre campus. Day camps cover every topic from astronomy to zoology, and new camp topics this year include sci-fi, a look at the history of Detroit (with a field trip into the city), and an overnight in the museum.
