Freedom Over Me
Miss Andrea recommends Freedom Over Me: eleven slaves, their lives their dreams brought to life by Ashley Bryan

Ashley Bryan tells the tales of ten slaves through poetry in his most recent book. Freedom Over Me is based on a true document from July 5, 1828 on which Mrs. Fairchilds is taking stock of her estate as she prepares to sell. While each of the accounts of the slaves is an educated estimation of their lives, it is beautifully written.

This book is moving, engrossing, and thought-provoking. Children ages 10 and up will have a better understanding of a major part of our history as a country as well as a feeling of empathy and compassion for the characters portrayed. An excellent read! *Won a Newbery Honor 2016*
