Coping with Crying
Babies cry for many reasons. Here are some tips for soothing or calming your baby:
- Check for basic needs such as hunger or a dirty diaper
- Check if baby is too hot, too cold or un uncomfortable clothing
- Offer a pacifier (if more than 4 weeks of latching has been established with breastfeeding moms)
- Hold baby close to your chest and walk or rock baby
- Sing or hum to baby
- Take baby for a walk in a stroller or a ride in the car
- Place baby in a safe place. Check on baby every 5 to 10 minutes to make sure baby is all right. As long as your baby is safe, crying will not hurt them.
Never, never shake your baby - even one second can harm baby's brain for life! If you become frustrated, do not take it out on your baby. Don't be afraid to call someone in your support system or your Healthy Start Care Coordinator and ask for help.

January is Birth Defects Prevention Month
Every 4 1/2 minutes, a baby is born with a major birth defect in the United States. They are the leading cause of death among U.S. infants, accounting for approximately 20% of mortality in the first year of life. In addition, babies born with birth defects have a greater chance of illness and long term disability than babies without birth defects. January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, a time to focus on raising awareness about the frequency with which birth defects occur in the U.S. and of the steps that can be taken to prevent them. While not all birth defects can be prevented, there are things women can do to get ready for a healthy pregnancy.
- Be fit. Eat a healthy diet and work towards a healthy weight before pregnancy.
- Be healthy. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. Be sure to consume at least 400 micrograms of folic acid every day before and during early pregnancy. Work to get health conditions, like diabetes, in control before becoming pregnant.
- Be wise. Visit a healthcare professional regularly. Consult with your healthcare provider about any medications, including prescription and over-the-counter medications and dietary or herbal supplements, before taking them.

Community Liaison Regional Team Meeting
The Community Liaison Regional Team 3 met on Wednesday, November 30th to share best practices and strategies between eight Healthy Start Coalitions, covering 13 counties in west-central Florida.
Upcoming Events
Hernando County's World's Greatest Baby Shower event will be held on Saturday, February 18th at the Hernando County Fairgrounds and will be held from 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM for pregnant moms and families with infants under 12 months. This is a free event.
Citrus County World's Greatest Baby Shower event will be held on Tuesday, April 18th. More details will follow in the April 2017 edition of the e-newsletter.
