- Before applying for a grant based on an idea, ensure that you are already addressing the problem and can demonstrate your work and results.
- Apply for grants with quality applications that tell the story of your organization's goals and results.
- Network with funders as 'people first,' who care about the same issues as your organization.
- If you know through demonstration that your work fills a gap or meets a need, stay the course.

Brooke Kidd, Executive Director of Joe's, is proud to celebrate the organization's growth during its 22 years in existence. Re
garding Joe's growth over the years, Standards for Excellence accreditati
on, and nonprofit challenges; here's what Brook shared with INSIGHT.
INSIGHT: Can you highlight the organization's growth during the last couple of years?
Brooke: The past few years have seen growth and improvement in Joe's structure and capacity as an enduring nonprofit business in Prince George's County. New members to Joe's Board of Directors are seasoned professionals and most have nonprofit board experience. We have a full-time Development Director and will soon hire a full-time Financial Manager. For the first time in its history, Club Joe's, an arts-based, daily, after school program, experienced explosive growth and had a waitlist as more families seek high-quality, after school programming that is affordable and accessible.
INSIGHT: How has Standards for Excellence© impacted the quality of your brand?
Brooke:
The Standards for Excellence recognition has contributed to our brand as a well-run, operationally sound, nonprofit business that community members and donors can trust. The standards' approval has been a part of how we brand excellence, while providing tools to operate efficiently and consistently.
INSIGHT: What, if any, challenges do you face as a nonprofit in Prince George's?
Brooke: The 'scarcity mentality' of our community still prevails, despite the fact that it's been proven Prince George's County is an affordable and attractive place to invest your time and resources. However, that mentality is gradually changing, and Joe's is contributing to that change by creating opportunities for people across the region to explore what we have to offer.
