THIS SUNDAY IN WORSHIP
FEBRUARY 12, 2017

Sermon: Rev. LeeAnn Inman
New Year, Same Promises: "God's Promise of Blessing"

Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12 (NRSV)

The Beatitudes present a laundry list of promises, but frankly most of them are not the promises we would prefer.  Rather than hear, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted," we would rather hear, "You won't ever mourn."  The promise of the Beatitudes is not the guarantee of a carefree life, it's that, no matter what, something good will emerge from the dust of something not good.  Perhaps this process won't happen in the way we would prefer, but nonetheless, we can entrust ourselves to a God who speaks special promises for the small, the suffering, the shy, and the sorrow-filled.
Thanks, Eddie!
In case the news hasn't reached you yet, last Sunday was Eddie Pipkin's last as assistant to the pastor on the Peace staff.  Eddie announced his resignation in worship and to the Staff-Parish Committee on February 5th. The good news is that Eddie, Melanie, and Rachel will remain part of the Peace family, of which they have been vital members for more than two decades. Eddie plans to channel his professional energies in new and different ways, especially writing.  Pray for him in these new ventures.  I will personally miss Eddie's creativity and passion for ministry as a staff member, but I know the entire Pipkin family will bring that same passion, leading and serving in new ways.

Second Saturday Church Work Morning - February 11
Every month we hold a second Saturday campus work morning. Our commitment is to have a specific list of chores or projects to complete each month, and that our work will begin at 8:00 a.m. and finished no later than 12:00 noon. This will be an opportunity for many people to contribute their gifts and time in a way that will be rewarding and fulfilling.  There is no obligation to show up every month.  No skill set or handy man capabilities required.  Just love for our church and the desire to serve. Hope to see you on Saturday, February 11th!
"Party Hearty" Wednesday Connect - February 15
On Wednesday, February 15th we'll be hosting our once-a-month Wednesday Connect event.  We provide the main meat dish (this month spaghetti), some bread, and the drinks; you bring all your favorite sides and desserts (and if you are on that busy schedule with no time to get a dish together, no worries-there will be plenty to eat). The food line will be open beginning at 6:00 p.m. (we know some of you have trouble getting there by 6:00, so no worries-drop on in, the food will be waiting). At 6:40, we'll start the "Party Hearty" (Valentine's Day inspired) festivities!  This is a regular monthly gathering, sharing a meal and focusing on something different each month (sometimes service-oriented, sometimes a special program, and sometimes just fun hanging out together). No advance sign-up necessary. Bring the neighbors.

Habitat at Women Build: Raising Walls, Raising Funds & Raising Spirits! - Build Day March 8
This annual fundraising event with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando is about women in the Orlando community coming together to build homes-and hope. This year's home will be built at Butler's Preserve , in the Malibu Groves area. The build day is on March 8th , with a special Women Build celebration on May 13th.  We will help build a home for Latrina, a dedicated mother of five currently living in a two-bedroom apartment with her three youngest daughters. Latrina is so thankful that she will be able to purchase her own home, something she never dreamed she would be able to do.

Across the country, nearly 1 in 3 households pays more than 30 percent of their income for housing and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food or clothing. In Orlando, that percentage is closer to 50% of renters who are cost-burdened.  Through financial gifts, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better life for themselves.

If you would like to help sponsor this event, Peace UMC will match your donation.  You can donate through our church website. Or make your check payable to PUMC with Habitat noted on the memo line (please donate no later than February 26th). We are also looking for a couple women volunteers to participate at the build site on March 8th.  For further information, or if you have questions, please contact Cathy Tschanz at cetschanz@outlook.com.
