Notes from Ms. Dahnke

Tell It to the Source

If I asked each of you to think back to your childhood, I have no doubt that you would be able to name many games that you played. I also dare bet that one of those games would be what we referred to as "telephone." The game began with one person whispering a message of some kind in another person's ear.  The message was sent on down the line until the last person had to repeat it aloud so that all could hear. The fun part of the game was that the original message was usually so misconstrued that everyone would laugh at how the original intent and wording had changed by being passed through so many people. As adults, we like to think that we have outgrown this little game and are much too sophisticated to participate. Unfortunately, we just do not use that name for this activity any more.

While trying to think about what to write this week, I thought about writing a list of my Top Ten Pet Peeves.  It might have included something like this:
  • I really dislike it when people put on their turn signal after they hit the brake.
  • I do not like it when I am in line at the checkout and the person ahead of me acts shocked that they actually have to pay for the items that were just rung up.
  • I think that if people are too scared or unable to drive in the winter or when it rains, they should keep their car parked in the garage for the season or the storm.
The list can go on and on, and I am sure that you can add your own, but there are two things for me that are more aggravating than any others.  First of all, I am bothered by anonymous letters.  If it is a problem to you and you are passionate enough to write about it, then sign your name and let me know how I can reach you so we can sit down and talk it out.  Second, and most importantly, I get really frustrated when people insist on playing "telephone" instead of going directly to the person who can actually do something about the situation.  For example, I am having a problem with Sally, so I go and tell Joni about it.  Since my friends are quite human, Joni will just happen to mention it to Kelly Jo.  The "game" is now up and running.  Sally has no clue that we are even having a problem until she hears a totally distorted version of what happened from Raymond.  Was I looking for an answer to the problem?  Did I need someone to be on "my side?"  Or, did I think that Joni could actually do something about the situation?

I do not think there are any of us who are exempt from playing the game when it comes to repeating things that we heard about another person.  We like to think that we are well-informed and are able to inform others. When someone hurts us, we get a little satisfaction from making them squirm or even upsetting them as much as they upset us.  It is a bit scary to confront others when we have been wronged or when they have wronged another.  It is with great hesitation that we go up to a person who is the subject of a rumor to ask if that rumor is true or not.

I never really knew my maternal grandfather because he died when I was in kindergarten.  I do know, however, that my "papa" had a reputation of being someone who would hear a rumor or story about someone and, rather than spread the story himself, would find the person and ask them if it were true.  He was known to others as someone who would "respond not react" to situations.  I can imagine that there were many times that this got him into a bit of trouble, but at least no one ever wondered what he was thinking. Unfortunately, I still share things with others when I should go to the source of the issue.  I still react to things when I should just take a deep breath and wait until I calm down to respond.  I have a long way to go in this area of Christ-like behavior.

One of the goals I have set for myself and for this Christian school community is that we are able to become a bit better at talking things out with the people who matter the most and those with whom we might disagree.  I would encourage you to work on this area with me.  If you feel your child has been wronged by a teacher in some way, talk directly to the teacher, not your next door neighbor.  Encourage each other to talk to the source of your frustration so that resolution and healing can take place.  And certainly, do not forget that God is always available to listen to our ventings and frustrations.  He will never mess up our message or misconstrue it in any way.  When God told us in Matthew 18 to confront each other in brotherly love when we have been wronged, that was not a suggestion if everything else failed; it was a command.

School, Day Care and CCC will be closed Mon., Feb. 20 in observance of Presidents' Day.

Thank You

News from BCA Business Office - 2017-2018 Enrollment -  Kindergarten - 8th grade
Re-enrollment for the 2017-2018 School Year is now open for our current student families. The priority window for 2017-2018 begins now and continues through March 1, 2017. Please return the completed re-enrollment application and Joyful Response forms with a $300 per student ($200 second student and a $500 family maximum) re-enrollment deposit no later than Wednesday, March 1. (Forms have been sent home, but additional copies are available in the front lobby.) After March 1, we will begin admitting new students from the admissions list to classes for 2017-2018. If you have not re-enrolled your child by March 1, we cannot guarantee there will be space later. In addition, tuition increases $200 per student after March 1, 2017.

If you have a child who attends the PK3 program for the current academic year and are not planning to continue through the summer, you will also need to re-enroll your child for the PK4 class for the fall. Please return the completed CCC re-enrollment application and Joyful Response form with a $50 per student re-enrollment deposit no later than Wednesday, March 1.

If you have a child who attends the PK4 program for the current academic year OR year round, you will need to re-enroll your child for kindergarten for the fall. SPECIAL OPEN HOUSE FOR PARENTS OF CURRENTLY ENROLLED PRE-K3 and PRE-K4 STUDENTS
On Thurs., Feb. 23, we will be having an open house, not only for prospective families, but also for our currently enrolled families who have a rising pre-K4 or Kindergarten student. Mrs. Ann Bolden will be in her classroom from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to answer any questions parents may have about what their child may expect as they transition from Pre-K4 to Kindergarten.

Additionally, Mrs. Sara McIntyre and Mrs. Jenni Woodrow will be in their classrooms to talk to families about Pre-K4.

Mrs. Jane Mullinax, our business office mgr., will also be in Mrs. Bolden's classroom to answer questions about tuition payments and other business-related items.
REFERRAL INCENTIVE
A financial incentive of $100 will be given to current or new families for each family that refers a pre-school student (age 6 weeks - 4 years), $500 for an elementary aged student (K-5) and $1,000 for a middle school student (6-8) who enrolls in Belvoir Christian Academy. The referral credit will be applied to your tuition account in January for referred K-8 grade students.

The referral credit will be applied to your tuition after three months for referred children age 6 weeks to 4 years. The referral incentive may be split among the families listed on the new student's application.  This incentive does not apply to families who already have their child (ren) enrolled in our school.  In other words, a younger sibling does not qualify as a new student.  In order to qualify for the incentive, the school family must be listed on the original enrollment form as having made the referral, the student must be accepted into Belvoir Christian Academy, and the new family's account must be current.
