BEST OF THE WEEK
FEBRUARY 6 - FEBRUARY 10, 2017

Every Friday this school year, " Best of the  Week" will recognize
St. Edward High School's commitment to authentic instruction by
highlighting the people and programs that define the St. Ed's experience.

LESSON OF THE WEEK
HOW CONTEXT SHAPES PERSPECTIVE
Lab work in science class is an experience that is essential to student inquiry and learning. In a position statement published by the National Science Teachers Association, they state: "A hallmark of science is that it generates theories and laws that must be consistent with observations. Much of the evidence from these observations is collected during laboratory investigations...These skills and knowledge, fostered by laboratory investigations, are an important part of inquiry-the process of asking questions and conducting experiments as a way to understand the natural world... Labs must be an integral part of the science curriculum."

At St. Edward High School, we believe active and engaging learning experiences, like labs, are essential to build lasting knowledge across the curriculum. This week in Mr. Libero Puccini's physics classes, students worked collaboratively on an Impulse-Momentum Practicum. A car was launched from rest by a loaded spring as motion sensors linked to student computers graphed information needed for students to determine the change in the car's velocity. Once students determined the velocity, they then calculated the change in momentum. Using the graphed data, students were then able to calculate the average net force applied by the loaded spring. Applying Hooke's Law, they determined how far the spring was compressed as well as the spring constant.

The classroom environment was exciting, and it was clear how much students valued Mr. Puccini's energy as he moved from table to table, challenging his students and asking leading questions to help foster deeper learning in this Lesson of the Week.

PEOPLE OF THE WEEK
ST. EDWARD SPIRIT SQUAD
As we gear up for the winter sports playoffs, the St. Edward Spirit Squad has been fully engaged in generating enthusiasm among classmates to make their voices heard as they cheer the Eagles on to victory!

Students came to school today dressed in costumes to promote the student section theme for tonight's basketball game versus St. Ignatius, and the Spirit Squad has been hard at work this week preparing for this afternoon's  winter sports rally, which will celebrate our team's successes to date and create excitement for the big games ahead.  The rally will include a much-anticipated "bubble soccer" tournament among the four classes, as they play for the coveted "Sledge" - a tradition at St. Edward rallies since 2010.

Next week will mark the introduction of the new St. Edward Superfan App.  The Superfan App allows students to track their attendance at events like St. Edward games, concerts and Edwardian Players performances as they compete against each other to determine who the biggest Eagles Superfan is. The app also includes an event calendar, scores, and links to broadcasts from the St. Edward Sports Network.

For all of their work in spreading school spirit throughout our campus, the members of the St. Edward Spirit Squad are the People of the Week!

THE WOW FACTOR!
CHRIS HERREN INSPIRES ST. EDWARD AUDIENCES
On Wednesday, the St. Edward Community was treated to a visit from speaker Chris Herren, who addressed the entire student body during the school day and offered a program to parents in the evening.  Herren is a former college basketball and NBA star who has battled the challenges of addiction throughout his life.  Now eight years sober, he travels the country sharing his story and the lessons he has learned in the hope of impacting the lives of students who face the temptations of drugs and alcohol, and parents who may find it difficult to approach the topic with their children.

Mr. Herren immediately engaged the student body with his personal story, and by focusing his message not only on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but on the factors that compel young people to choose to experiment with drugs and alcohol. His uplifting message on self-esteem and on young people being comfortable with who they are resonated with our students.  Following his talk, he was surrounded by students who wished to thank him for his inspiration.

St. Edward High School wishes to extend a special thank you to Mr. Dennis Gallagher '70 for his generous sponsorship of Mr. Herren's visit.  Mr. Herren's honesty, openness and generosity of spirit will leave a lasting impact on our community.
