 HELPFUL FLOWCHARTS FOR PERMITTED SEISMIC DESIGN ANALYSIS METHODS PER ASCE7-10
When starting a new project, is it a challenge to determine what design method you can use for the seismic analysis of your structure? Do you find yourself spending a significant amount of time researching associated code provisions?

DESIGN CRITERIA BASED ON STRUCTURAL IRREGULARITY
When your structure has a horizontal or vertical irregularity, do you find yourself trying to quickly recall the additional seismic design requirements you need to consider? Two quick examples: Is a 3-D analysis required? Is the irregularity allowed in the seismic design category where the structure is to be built?
In December 2016, Kimberley Robinson, PE, SE, from SunSteel, LLC, gave a presentation on
Structural Irregularities per the ASCE7-10 Seismic Design Requirements. Kim's presentation focused on visually being able to identify horizontal and vertical irregularities in structures, followed by a discussion of what the code requires for each type of irregularity.

SE University began the SEU Speaker Inspires program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world.
In November 2016, Carlos de Oliveira, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., from Cast Connex Corporation, gave a talk on
Structural Applications for Steel Castings. He chose the École Lakay Project in Haiti (
http://www.cca-acc.com/cca/ecole-lakay/) for the
SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.
Carlos chose the École Lakay Project because his company has previously donated to the design and re-construction of this project after the 2010 earthquake destroyed this trade school in Port-au-Prince. The new facility includes state-of-the-art seismic-resistant High Strength Connectors, made by Cast Connex, which have been fabricated and erected, but the project needs additional funding to complete the non-structural components of the building through Builders without Borders and the Canadian Construction Association. Besides teaching the students a trade, the school also provides basic necessities and will be able to accommodate 200 students upon completion.

STATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS
As we begin the new year, there are a number of states with license renewals due by April 30th. If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.
In the following states, ALL engineers should renew their license by the specified date:

Connecticut (January 31st) *

Utah (March 31st)

Florida (February 28th) +

In the following states, SOME engineers should renew their license
by the specified date:

Louisiana (March 31st)
|
Kansas (April 30th)
|
*These states do not have continuing education requirements.
+Florida requires that engineers use approved providers for continuing education. SE University is an approved provider to help meet both the Area of Practice and Ethics requirements.
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

COMING NEXT TO SE UNIVERSITY - WELDING MYTHS THAT STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
On February 8th we will be welcoming Duane Miller, PE, from the Lincoln Electric Company, to SE University to present Welding Myths that Structural Engineers Need to Know About. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EST.
Structural engineers do not often have the opportunity to learn about the important topic of welding. A variety of welding-related myths continue to be promulgated, oftentimes by well-intentioned albeit misinformed professionals. Without formal training by structural engineers to dispute such claims, these myths live on. In this presentation, myths will be presented and challenged. Topics to be discussed include selection of weld types, weld orientation, weld backing, shop versus field welding, overhead welding, prequalified WPSs, weld quality, and welding costs.
Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, February 3rd.
