Creating Safe Spaces for Tough Student Conversations
Recent executive action on immigration and refugees has prompted concerns from a number of our students and families, as some shared Monday in an event at South High School attended by Board President Anne Rowe, Superintendent Tom Boasberg and Deputy Superintendent Susana Cordova. We wanted to again provide resources on teaching current events and on having difficult conversations that may be helpful to you:
  • What do I Say to Students? This resource posted Monday on the Teaching Tolerance website discusses how students may be impacted by President Trump's recent actions on immigration and refugees, and provides tips, facts and additional links for productive conversations in classrooms and schools.
  • Joint Statement on Executive Orders: Superintendent Boasberg joined with leaders from the Colorado Education Association, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and Padres y Jovenes Unidos to oppose the executive orders.
  • Resource Bank for Shared Core Value Week: While some resources in this comprehensive bank focused on the inauguration, others includes guidelines for discussing bias and a toolkit for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). In addition, quick contact information for central support services, including help in talking with families and employee counseling, are listed.
  • Responding to Immigration Concerns: Superintendent Tom Boasberg and the DPS legal team created an FAQ responding to immigration concerns commonly voiced by families. The document is available in 10 languages.
In addition, please consider having your school team participate in "Bridging the Ethnic and Racial Divide," a new session by Equity Boot Camp . This session is open to all DPS team members and will take place at New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Blvd., Denver, CO 80205.

Choose from two session dates:
  • Wednesday, Feb. 22, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 23, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Using Student Perception Survey Results
Student perception surveys (SPSs) ensure that students have a confidential way to provide meaningful feedback to their teachers. Why is student feedback important? Because we know you are here, first and foremost, for your students and their feedback can help you ensure you are meeting their needs. We also know from research that  student perceptions highly correlate with student achievement -- which means the results also align with measures of student academic success. Feedback from the SPS helps teachers and administrators identify areas of strength and growth in order to provide students with the best learning experience possible.

We encourage you to share the SPS results with your students and send them the message that their voices matter. The  SPS Handbook  includes a number of ideas for sharing the results with your students.
You can view your SPS results by accessing the LEAP application tool -- check out this guide for directions. If you have questions, p lease contact the LEAP team.
