Councilmember Fox Elected Vice-Chair of the Orange County Great Park Board of Directors
 Fox gains new position at the first Great Park Board meeting of 2017.
Melissa Fox was elected as Vice Chair of the Orange County Great Park Board of Directors on January 24th. Irvine Mayor Don Wagner was elected Chair.
Melissa looks forward to working with her fellow board members and the community as the Great Park continues to be built out to serve the residents of Irvine and Orange County.

Irvine State of the City Address
Join me to listen to the State of the City on February 14.
Irvine Mayor Donald P. Wagner delivers his first
State of the City Address on Feb. 14 in the Council Chamber at the Irvine Civic Center. The event begins with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by the Mayor's address at 6 p.m.
The annual address is to the City what the State of the Union is to the nation. The address will highlight accomplishments of the past year, as well as look to what's ahead in 2017.
No RSVP is necessary for the media or members of the public who wish to attend. Let me know if you plan to attend so we can meet afterward!

New Irvine Ice Facility Groundbreaking Ceremony
Join me at the Irvine Ice Facility Groundbreaking at The Great Park on February 16.
The City of Irvine will co-host the groundbreaking of a
Community Ice Facility at the Orange County Great Park.
When open in 2018, the facility will be the largest in California and one of the largest in the U.S. Co-host H&S Ventures, an affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, will have visual presentations and more information about the facility at the groundbreaking, 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16.
The 270,000-square-foot ice facility, to be built, operated and maintained by the affiliate, will have three National Hockey League-standard ice rinks and one Olympic size, to include a 2,500-seat arena.
Located near the Great Park's Palm Court and adjacent to the Festival Site parking area, the Community Ice Facility will be reserved most of the time for public use. A variety of ice sports and recreation will include youth and adult hockey programs, regional and national tournaments, figure skating, and open public skating. The Anaheim Ducks are expected to practice occasionally at the 13.5-acre site.
The groundbreaking is free to the public; no RSVP is needed. Enter the Great Park at Marine Way and follow the signs.

Melissa Fox's City Council Agency and Committee Appointments 2017
 Fox appointed to Board of Directors of Orange County Fire Authority and other local and regional boards and agencies.
I am pleased to report that I have been appointed by Irvine Mayor Don Wagner and my City Council colleagues to serve as Irvine's representative on the Board of Directors of the
Orange County Fire Authority and other regional and local agencies and committees.
I am particularly pleased with my energy, watershed, wildlife, environmental, childcare and infrastructure appointments, since I have a longstanding interest in moving forward in these areas of policy. I am also particularly pleased to join the Library Advisory Board, since my mother was a librarian and taught me the importance of community access to literature and information.

Autonomous Vehicle Technology in Irvine: Moving Irvine Toward Greener, Smarter Transportation Solutions
 Irvine City Councilmember Melissa Fox presents talk in Los Angeles to bring research jobs ad innovative technology to Irvine.
I recently had the opportunity to present a talk to the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) about bringing research and jobs to Irvine involving the development of autonomous vehicle technology. Among those present were representatives of major innovative corporations. I would like to say thank you to Irvine Planning Commissioner Dustin Nirschl for his invaluable help in writing this talk and in bringing research jobs and AV technology to Irvine. Here is the text of that talk:
Irvine boasts a long-standing, commitment to planning that has resulted in it's being viewed as one of the more desirable locations in the nation.
The city has been planned under a village community model to ensure that residents enjoy safe, accessible, family-oriented living, with short commutes to local entertainment, dining, shopping, and nearby schools. To complement these village communities, Irvine has consistently worked to develop a robust network of bicycle paths.
Recently, Irvine's population has surged, and two high-density hubs are nearly built out. Residents still travel to close-proximity, village destinations, but now also frequent the Spectrum and Irvine Business Complex hubs. These high-density hubs draw additional vehicle trips on Irvine roadways because: (1) the hub is too far to make walking/bicycling practical, (2) bicycle/pedestrian paths fail to completely connect community to key locations, or (3) a form of preferred alternative transportation such as shuttle or trolley is unavailable to the commuter. Congestion is compounded because Irvine's daily population nearly doubles due to the influx of business professionals circulating to the Spectrum and IBC hubs. These issues signal that Irvine has reached a point of maturation where more sophisticated and smarter transportation planning with increased transportation choices for Irvine's residents and commuters is required.

Federal Aviation Administration Hosts Public Information Workshop
Learn more about the Southern California Metroplex project.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be holding a public information workshop regarding their plans to move forward with the Southern California Metroplex project. The project will replace several existing conventional air traffic control procedures with new
satellite-based procedures. The project is expected to improve airspace efficiency and safety in Southern California by improving the optimization and efficiency while routing aircraft in and out of Southern California. Details for the workshop addressing Orange County John Wayne Airport (SNA) and Long Beach (Daughtery Field) (LGB) are as follows:

The
Irvine City Council
is
comprised of the Mayor and four City Councilmembers who are elected at large by registered voters of the City.
Councilmembers serve a four-year terms and the Mayor serves a two-year term. The City of Irvine has a two-term limit for elected officials.
