Sunken Gardens has a long history as one of Florida's "roadside" attractions, only a few of which remain. In the early '20's, the garden tour was just a nickel! Its beautiful Mediterranean Revival building dates to 1926 and in the 1940's it was the local coca cola bottling plant! In 1999 voters said yes to the purchase of Sunken Gardens allowing it to continue to provide fun and education to residents & tourists under city direction.

Preservation Awards Celebration Feb. 8!
The Awards Celebration is nearly upon us and we are excited! Sometimes it seems like it building after building is coming down but the award winners show how preservation is indeed working in the 'Burg. It also reminds us what a special city we have!
The Celebration will take place at a previous award winning building, the1929 St. Petersburg Woman's Club. It is just across the Snell Isle bridge on land donated to the club by one of the city's premiere early developers, Perry Snell.
The evening will start with a reception with music by Dean Johanesen and special food and a cash (donation) bar from some of our favorite local businesses -
Banyan Cafe & Catering, Elizabeth Carr and
Green Bench Brewing. Don't forget to bring a check or credit card so you can bid at the silent auction on watercolor paintings of local historic buildings by artist Robert Holmes, who generously donated his work to SPP.
It promises to be a special evening you won't want to miss! Be among the first to congratulate the award winners, help support SPP and have a fun evening with other like minded people who want to keep St. Petersburg special!

Action Alert - Your Voice is Important to Recognize Women's History in the 'Burg
The Burnside/Duckering Home 5th Avenue North
Properties
Among the areas of downtown where history is being demolished is 4th & 5th Avenues North, a corridor that has long served as a downtown gateway. The corridor includes architecturally significant homes dating to the early 1910's up to the mid-1920's, an increasingly rare downtown resource. These buildings help give our city a sense of place and make it special, something not often achieved with new development.
SPP is seeking to landmark 4 homes in the corridor but one particularly stands out: the 1914 Burnside/Duckerng home at 136 5th Ave. N.
- Architecturally significant, prairie style home
- One among the increasingly small number of pre-1920 homes remaining downtown
- First owned by Virginia Burnside, in 1920 she became the first women elected to the 'Burg's city council and the first female elected to a municipal office south of the Mason Dixon line at a time when women could not vote
- Home later owned by Mary Duckering, whose sister Florence, would winter with her and was the first female surgeon in the country admitted to the American College of Surgeons
Unfortunately, the home has been owned by Tampa developers who have left the property vacant & in disrepair after a failed development plan. The future (after the court rules in foreclose case), absent landmarking, is sure to be demolition and intense new development.
Council will vote on SPP's landmark applications on Feb. 16. Click here to see SPP's landmark application and the city staff report recommending landmark designation. Make your voice heard NOW!
Thank You For Helping to Keep St. Pete Special!
