Preservation Grants Awarded to California

The efforts to preserve and honor California's richly diverse heritage received a boost, recently, with two awards of federal grants.

California received a National Park Service Underrepresented Communities grant funded through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The $50,000 grant will be administered by the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) to identify and nominate to the National Register of Historic Places properties associated with Asian American and Pacific Islanders in California. Read the press release from the Secretary of the Interior.

The City of Riverside had the proud distinction of being the California rec ipient of a HPF grant through the National Park Service African American Civil Rights Grant Program . Thirty-nine grants were awarded nationwide. The grant awarded to Riverside will aid in the City's development of an African American Civil Rights survey and historic context. Sacred Sites Training Video Now Available

From the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) comes news of the release of a new training video, " Native American Sacred Sites and the Federal Government." The video arose out of the Memorandum of Understanding Regarding Interagency Coordination and Collaboration for the Protection of Indian Sacred Sites (MOU), of which the ACHP was one of the signatories. As explained by Valerie Hauser, Director of the ACHP's Office of Native American Affairs, "The signatories in coordination with subject matter experts across the federal government, Indian Country, academia, and tribal advocacy groups, developed the training for use by federal, state, and tribal governments, and anyone interested in learning about sacred sites protection." The video is one reflection of the signatories' commitment "to work together to improve the protection of and tribal access to sacred sites."
