The new semester has begun, and though it's cold outside, there is much happening at the Museum. Two new exhibitions drawn from the permanent collection with several important borrowed works open this month, including AEGYPTUS: Egypt in the Greco-Roman World on February 2nd and Modern Medieval: Materiality and Spirituality in German Expressionism on February 16th. Be sure to come out to hear classics professor James Higginbotham and curatorial assistant Honor Wilkinson, the curators of these two exhibitions, speak about their new projects. Also, as we note in the article below, please join us for presentations and performances by Bowdoin students this month. See you at the Museum!

Celebrating Bowdoin's Molinari Medals and Plaquettes

In 1966-67 the Bowdoin College Museum of Art acquired nearly one thousand distinguished medals and plaquettes, generously donated by Amanda Marchesa Molinari, in memory of her husband, Cesare Molinari d'Incisa. Modeled after ancient precedents, medals and plaquettes, which emerged during the Renaissance, celebrated political, religious, and cultural leaders, as well as commemorating transformative events. The Molinari collection, one of the most distinguished in the United States, features masterpieces designed by leading Renaissance, Rococo, and Neoclassical artists, including Pisanello, Matteo de Pasti, Francesco da Sangallo, Guillaume Dupré, Nicolas Marie Gatteaux, and David d'Angers. Now with the support of an anonymous donor, the BCMA prepares, for the first time, to make this important resource available electronically on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of this gift.

Recent Acquisitions of Feminist Video Art

The Museum's media gallery currently features a rotation of recent acquisitions that represent iconic artists working at the intersection of feminist video art and performance art: Joan Jonas (American, born 1936), Dara Birnbaum (American, born 1946), and Pipilotti Rist (Swiss, born 1962). Through January 30, the gallery screens Vertical Roll (1972) by Joan Jonas, a highly acclaimed artist who represented the United States in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.
Student Programs at the BCMA

The Bowdoin students' academic and social engagement with the BCMA is integral to the Museum's academic mission and a valued contribution to its identity. Partnering with academic departments, faculty members, and student societies, the Museum is always eager to foster discussion and make its unique resources available to students in class visits, tours, research appointments, and professional internships.
