Hunter Barbour

Growing up, Hunter Barbour called both Lake Gaston and South Hill, Virginia home.  After graduating high school from Brunswick Academy and experiencing larger colleges, Hunter returned home and earned his Associate of Applied Science in Administration of Justice from Southside Virginia Community College.

Hunter owned and operated a Jackson Hewitt franchise for several years before returning to school at ECPI University in Richmond, Virginia, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Network Security, graduating summa cum laude.  Upon completion of the degree program, Hunter had also earned CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, and several Microsoft certifications.

Hunter was employed as a Systems Engineer for Meherrin River Regional Jail before taking his current position as Information Technology, IT Director for Pamunkey Regional Jail Authority.  He is also currently enrolled at Liberty University, pursuing a Master of Science in Cybersecurity.

Hunter reflects, " My time at SVCC was critical in turning my life around. After failed attempts at larger colleges, I came to SVCC needing to learn about life and education. Fortunately, I had several teachers at SVCC who molded who I am today. Terry Whisnant was the first teacher that made a big impact on my life. He was the type of teacher that did not allow you to just pass through his class without a student learning something, whether it be a life lesson or Psychology."  Another instructor who Hunter acknowledges had an impact is Dr. Chad Patton. "Dr. Patton taught me a great deal about the importance of being an outstanding citizen and giving back to my community. He continues, "SVCC is the type of small community college that changes lives daily. The teaching and education are second to none. Larger colleges I have attended couldn't touch the valuable lessons I learned at SVCC. Southside Virginia is lucky to have such a great institution of learning available to the community."
