February 2017

Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of  Abraham Lincoln  and  Frederick Douglass READ MORE...

ARTICLE: Saving $1 Million Dollars for Retirement
How many of us will retire with $1 million or more in savings? More of us ought to - in fact, more of us may need to, given inflation and the rising cost of health care.  Sadly, few pre-retirees have accumulated that much. A 2015 Government Accountability Office analysis found that the average American aged 55-64 had just $104,000 in retirement money...

GET TO KNOW THE ARGI TEAM
Connor Powell, CPA, MBA
Tax & Business Specialist

Describe your role at ARGI in less than two sentences: Connor B. Powell, doer of taxes. Kidding. My role is to help clients identify and achieve their personal and professional goals by developing a tax and business plan that's designed to meet their needs. My job is also to ensure that tax season is the most positive experience possible for all that we work with. How's that for less than two sentences?

Do you have a nickname? Lots. CP, Con, Conman, Convict, Billy (long story behind that last one, don't ask).

Hometown: Goshen, Kentucky.

Motto/mantra/favorite quote? I can't say I have a definitive favorite, but I've always been fascinated by the Bob Dylan lyric, "He not busy being born is busy dying".

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your life thus far?   Reconciling the conflict between my heart and my mind. Withdrawing from commitments has never been easy for me because I'm passionate about most things that I do. Making the decision to step away from soccer and walking away from the opportunity to become a pilot are the two things that come to mind.

Where is your favorite place to vacation? St. John, USVI.

What is your favorite hobby? Playing music-mandolin, guitar, harmonica.

What is the best book you have ever read? That's a tough one. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer stands out.

Are you involved with any charities or non-profits? Kentucky Youth Advocates. Their cause and statewide impact is unbelievable.

Number one thing on your bucket list? Explore Europe with my wife.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren't doing this ? I'd be a novelist. Or a college professor. Both would bring me joy.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? I'd be Joe Reeves for a day. Or a zoo keeper. Some people might consider those one in the same, though.

What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13? I'd tell thirteen year-old Connor never to fear vulnerability. Also, I'd tell him not to apply the parking brakes in a golf cart when the grass is still wet with morning dew. Especially when that golf cart is being parked at the top of a hill. And when that hill ends in a lake. Whoops.

How do you define success? Finding happiness, and sharing it with others.
