WALK FOR LIFE
is almost here! Every year this event raises approximately $50,000 for cancer research and care through donations to City of Hope and the Cancer Support Community. Permission slips and pledge forms were distributed during students' 3rd period classes last Friday. Interested participants can pick one up in any of the offices or just go to pvphs.com and find it under 'Panther Picks'. We hope that everyone in the Panther community will join us as we walk to Highridge Park from the Pen football field on 2/24. To participate in the Walk, a minimum amount of $30.00 must be raised or donated.
The Walk begins at 1:00 pm on February 24th at Peninsula's football field. Every participant will
receive a free shirt.
An important part of the Walk for Life is the rose ceremony, during which we read the names of loved ones we've lost to cancer. If you would like someone's name read during this ceremony, please email Season Pollock the name at

 In addition to completing the walk, you can also help by donating your hair during the carnival to children in need. Sign up to have your hair cut and donated during the Walk for Life carnival!  MODEL UNITED NATIONS PROGRAM
On Friday & Saturday, February 3rd & 4th, PVPHS Model United Nations team competed in their 2nd weekend conference of the new year at Huntington Beach High School. They faced tough competition from over 1500 delegates from 25 top tier schools like Mira Costa, Whitney, Cerritos, Edison, and Santa Margarita but our delegates were prepared and ready, taking home a number of awards.
In the two-day conference, delegates debated topics ranging from the militarization of space to food security in the South Pacific Islands. They addressed a number of social issues like the impact of climate change, and LGBT rights as well as more traditional political topics ranging from the South China Sea, the Syrian refugees and piracy on the high seas. In addition, the Historical Security Council transported themselves to the year 1980 where they were to deal with the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan and to try to resolve the Vietnam War.

Fair meetings in the month of February. The sessions were well-attended, so students should have the knowledge to select courses that best suit their personal interests and goals. We greatly appreciate Mrs. Fournier's dedication in organizing this annual event.

SERVICE LEARNING MEMBERS VOLUNTEER AT LA KITCHEN
Members of our Service Learning Leadership (SLL) class and their families spent Saturday volunteering alongside the LA Kitchen chefs and chefs in training at their downtown kitchen. LA Kitchen's mission is to make sure food is never wasted and ensuring that people never go hungry. Their job training and culinary services are having a huge impact on both food and job security for vulnerable populations throughout the LA Area. SLL students prepped food for meals the LA Kitchen will provide throughout the week. A fun, productive and inspiring way to start the weekend...hairnets and all!
 WEST BASIN "WATER IS LIFE" STUDENT ART CONTEST
West Basin's annual "Water is Life" student art contest is accepting art submissions until March 17, 2017 from 3rd-12th grade students attending public and private schools located in the West Basin service area. More details are available on their website:

 GO FOR BROKE ESSAY AND VIDEO CONTEST
Go For Broke National Education Center is a nonprofit organization that exists to preserve the legacy of the Japanese American WWII veterans through education. They are again hosting a student essay and video contest this year, giving high school and college students a chance to earn money while learning about the Japanese American soldiers of WWII. Varsity Dance is having an amazing season so far. They have placed in every division at all three competitions they have attended.

COED CHOREO SHINES AT STREET DANCE USA
COED Choreo competed in the Street Dance USA competition held at West Torrance High School this past Saturday. Among 20+ soloists, Nathan Pereira and Serena Nuber received Outstanding Performance awards, Keon Ghodrati 2nd place in the Mr. Street Dance division, and Michael Kasai took home 1st place and the title of Mr. Street Dance. Duets, Reina Ikeda and Momoko Kuratani received 4th place, and Nathan Pereira and Michael Kasai received 3rd place for their performances in the Street Dance Duet division. Varsity COED Choreo placed 1st for Partner Dance and Small Co-Ed Street Dance, 3rd in the Small Male Street Dance division, and 4th in the Large Co-Ed Street Dance division. Junior Varsity COED Choreo received an Outstanding Performance award in Large Co-Ed Street Dance and 4th place in the Medium Male Street Dance divisions. The team will be competing at West Torrance High School again in the West Spirit Day competition on Saturday, February 25th, so come out and support!
 MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS
The Music Department will start holding auditions for the 2017-2018 school year the week of Feb. 21st through Feb. 24th.
Mr. Steiner will visit all 3 intermediate schools on Tuesday, Feb 21st, to hear all non-string auditions. Mr. Steiner and Mr. Doctor will also hear auditions after school this week.
Sunday, February 26th
String Auditions will be held in the Band Room. If a student has not signed up, there is still time to schedule an audition time for Choir, Jazz Band, Marching Band and Orchestra, Information is posted on the Music Boosters website.
Music Booster Board Meeting will be held on Monday night, February 27th at 7 PM in the Band Room.

- Thursday, March 30th, Mr. Doctor will travel to New York with PVPHS Choir students to perform at the WorldStrides Choir Festival.
CIVIC LEARNING SUMMIT
Peninsula High was one of four schools in California asked to participate in the Civic Learning Summit in Sacramento, earlier this week. Last year, Peninsula High won the Civic Engagement Award for Capital Convoy, Teen Court, and Leadership Program, all of which are programs that the State views at models for the civic learning component for the new State of California Social Science Standards. The highlight of the summit was the inspiring words from Supreme Court Justice, Anthony Kennedy.

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK (February 19-25, 2017)
Peninsula High School's outstanding "SMERT" Department is celebrating National Engineering Week with numerous programs sponsored by our local partners, as well as State, National and International partners.
Following is an update on "What's Happening" in SMERT!
CYBERPATRIOT
Cyber Patriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program. The competition places high school teams in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. In the rounds of competition, teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cyber security vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services in six hours. Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region, and the top teams in the Nation earn all-expenses paid trips to Baltimore, MD for the National Finals Competition. Pen has six teams who all went to the State competition, and one of those teams made it to the regionals.
StellarXplorers
StellarXplorers inspires and attracts high school students to pursue STEM studies and careers in a challenging space system design competition involving all aspects of system development and operation with a spacecraft/payload. Pen has four teams who have qualified for the Semifinals and next week they will compete for the top 10 spots of the national competition that will be held in Colorado Spring.
RAYTHEON - FEBRUARY 22
 Every year, three students from Peninsula High school participate in the Raytheon sponsored engineering challenge to build and compete against 17 other high schools. Sixty Raytheon engineers work with students to solve a real engineering problem, and in the process they learn how engineers work and think as part of the "Discovering Your Hidden Capacity" engineering game. Raytheon engineers will conduct tours of the Electrical, Environmental, Pressure & Temperature, and Thermal Imaging Labs, giving students a first-hand experience of the testing and design process.
NORTHROP GRUMMAN 1/12 - 4/11
High School Innovation Challenge
 The High School Innovation Challenge (HSIC) is an annual high school design competition hosted at Northrop Grumman sites. The annual competition theme varies and is inspired by Northrop Grumman programs. Previous competition themes led to challenges which tasked students to build launcher systems, RC airplanes, and airships. The High School Innovation Challenge strives to encourage students to actively engage in fun and rewarding Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities.
The 2017 HSIC challenge is to build a remotely operated, weight efficient, self-powered device that deploys from a 6-in. cube to shade the largest area.
PVPHS ROBOTICS TEAM 2637 REPORT
 This weekend, Pen High Robotics Team 2637 is competing in the LA Robotics Scrimmage practice competition at Valencia High School. Build is working on a second robot (the first robot will be "bagged" three days after the Valencia High Competition, and can't be touched until competition begins at San Diego. Therefore, the team can use the second robot for further development and strategy perfection.)
This past week, students have been working overtime to get the robot ready for the coming scrimmage. Students have finished designing and building the drive train, intake, and climber; while others are working on designing and building a device to transport giant 1ft diameter gears across the field as well as a shooter to propel softball sized whiffle balls into an 8-foot-tall goal. CAD is working closely with build to come up with final designs for the gear manipulator and mechanism to move the balls from the floor of the robot up to the actual shooter.
Electronics is working with build to find a place to mount the exorbitant number of motor controllers, control systems, processing systems, mechanical systems, and electrical systems needed to run this year's robot. Programming meanwhile is working hard to implement the code that will successfully interface with all these systems. New for this year: programming is developing a way to give the robot a new set of eyes using 3-D vision software to help it find the goal and shoot from 10-20 feet away! All the sub-teams are coming together to work as one cohesive unit, like the cogs in a machine, going full tilt towards the ever closer finish line! GOOD LUCK PVPHS Robotics Team 2637, PHANTOM CATZ!
 PEN VEX TEAMS 3050A and 3050B
Our VEX program offers students a rich and exciting platform to immerse themselves in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through designing, programming, building, and research. Highly versatile construction systems allow students to build whatever they can imagine. The system is accessible to multiple ages and experience levels, catering to both beginners and experts. We currently have two VEX teams who have made it to the State level, and one of those teams has qualified for the National competition. Both teams are competing this Saturday in Northridge to qualify for the world competition.
ENGINEERING CLASSES AT PEN FOR 2017-2018
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED, 1 year)
Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
Principles of Engineering (POE, 1 year)
Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.
Aerospace Engineering (AE, 1 year)
This course propels students' learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets. They learn basic orbital mechanics using industry-standard software. They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles.
Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA, 1 year)
Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software.
Digital Electronics (DE, 1 year)
From smart phones to appliances, digital circuits are all around us. This course provides a foundation for students who are interested in electrical engineering, electronics, or circuit design. Students study topics such as combinational and sequential logic and are exposed to circuit design tools used in industry, including logic gates, integrated circuits, and programmable logic devices.
Capstone Research Engineering Design and Development (EDD, 1 year)
The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. AP Computer Science A (1 year)
AP Computer Science Principles "Intro" (1 year) 9-12
Designed to appeal to a diverse audience, this course examines some of the fundamental ideas of the science of computing. Lectures and hands-on assignments cover a wide range of topics such as hardware organization, the Internet, computer programming, limits of computing and social impact of computing.
AP Computer Science A Java (1 year) 10-12
The Advance Curriculum will teach students to design and implement computer programs that correctly solve a given problem and are also understandable, adaptable, and when appropriate, reusable.
Advance Computer Science (1 year) 10-12
Students will learn to design and implement data structure and project-based "real life" application and gaming design.
NEW ENGINEERING COURSE OFFERED AT PENINSULA HIGH
Computer Programming for Solving Applied Problems (C/C++)
Computers are everywhere and they need you to be effective! Innovators of the future will need programming skills. This year-long course introduces students to how a computer works, the basics of computer programming, and the importance of computing in the 21st century. It guides them to the programming language syntax in C/C++. Students will apply their programming skills to robotics, animation, data visualization, and showcase their ultimate skills via their RoboPlay video team competition. Students will gain a solid foundation in software design and development, be prepared for our advanced computer science courses, and be primed to support our need for skilled C based language programmers on our competitive engineering teams. C requires students to understand what a computer is actually doing when it runs a program. It has often been compared to being able to "bake from scratch" vs. other languages that are more analogous to "baking from a mix".
GUEST SPEAKER DISCUSSES CAREERS IN ENGINEERING
The Society of Progressive Engineers is looking forward to hosting two distinguished guest speakers Tom Priest and Jacqueline Herriage from Northrop Grumman on February 22 from 3:30 to 4:45 in T-102! They will be sharing their experience in mechanical, aerospace, and possibly naval engineering. Tom Priest and Jacqueline Herriage are the third in a series of guest speakers that SPE will be hosting throughout the year, as their goal is to expose students to the multi-faceted world of engineering through professionals in various fields of science. GIRLS' WATERPOLO MOVES ON TO THE SEMIFINALS
Pen faced off against Laguna Hills yesterday in a CIF quarterfinal match. Pen was up by a goal or two throughout the game until Laguna Hills tied it with a minute to go in regulation sending the game into overtime. Overtime in water polo consists of two 3-minute periods. Laguna Hills scored in the first period. Pen scored part way through the second
period to tie it up and then Lucie Abele scored with about 30 seconds left for the win - 8-7.
Our next game is this Wednesday at 5pm against South Pasadena. Pen won the flip so it is our "home" game, however, since semifinal games must be held at a neutral site, the game will be held at Mira Costa High. Admission is free and we hope we will have a huge panther cheering section on hand! Thank you to the Boys' Basketball team for coming out after their practice today to cheer the girls on.

YOGA AT PENINSULA HIGH
Super stressed? Need a moment to breath in your day? Consider joining our yoga class. Offered via the PE Department, students can receive PE or elective credit for taking some time to breath, stretch and strengthen their muscles during the day. This course is open to all fitness levels and to 10th, 11th and 12th graders who have completed at least one of year of PE credit including passing the physical fitness test. In the last three weeks, Peninsula High has had several incidents involving Edibles. Students have been under the influence of edibles laced with marijuana during school and at school events. Two students have been rushed to the hospital. We are
very lucky that these students have recovered, but we do not want a third incident where our luck runs out.

Aeries Portal Now Open to Schedule 2017-18 Classes!
Students are now able to submit their course requests for 2017-2018 in Aeries using their
student Aeries Portal. Information for course selection was mailed home last week. Students can access the Aeries portal through the school website,
pvphs.com by clicking on
AERIES at the top of the homepage. For complete details on registering for classes including assistance with finding course numbers, visit the
Course Selection page on our school website.
Students must have their own Aeries account to select classes; they cannot use the parent account.
If you do not have a student Aeries account please send an email to

Your email must contain the student's full name, birth date, grade, and email address. Please note that the student is requesting an Aeries account.
Once the Registrar links your email to Aeries, you will receive an email from [email protected] with the temporary password to access your account. Be sure to check your spam or junk folder if you do not receive the email.
Once courses are input into Aeries, scheduling paperwork, including Course Requests form and Time Management Activity worksheet and any Request for Placement forms, if required, MUST BE RETURNED TO THE COUNSELING OFFICE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24 at 3:00 pm.

If so, the Boeing Rep will be on campus Wednesday, February 22nd at 5:30pm in the PAC to go over the Boeing Summer Internship Program. If you are interested in majoring in or a career in Engineering, Technology, Science, Math and/or Computer Programming the Boeing Summer Internship is a wonderful opportunity. Please join us February 22nd to hear all about this amazing program. Parents are also welcome to attend.
All Students: March 3rd is the deadline to request a level down or drop a class without penalty.
Counselors will be presenting "Finding the Right Fit", a career guidance lesson for junior students. The lesson will be held on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
We believe it is critical for students to be able to recognize how their interests, skills and values relate to their career choices and college major.

Create a Web Grants for Students (WGS) account at
www.webgrants4students.org for information regarding their Cal Grant award offer. Cal Grant Eligibility Notifications are being mailed to eligible students, steps to confirm the award are on the letter and should be completed as soon as possible. If you have any questions, see Mrs. Arico in the CCC.
Looking for a way to help pay for College
There are many scholarships listed on Naviance which are offered by local organizations. Peninsula Education Foundation and Palos Verdes Peninsula Council of PTA's are just a few which Peninsula High School seniors are eligible. Due dates for many of these opportunities are quickly approaching so log onto Naviance right away.
