Beehive Wool Shop

New Arrivals at the Beehive!
The past few weeks have brought some lovely yarns to Beehive, and we're so excited that we want to tell you all about them.

Zen Yarn Garden

We have a new sock yarn from Zen Yarn Garden in Ontario. The Superfine Fingering (90% superfine superwash merino and 10% nylon) has 400 yds per skein, and Beehive has over twenty colours.

Let's take a minute to discuss the colours of this yarn. They are smashing! One of the most exciting things about Superfine Fingering is that the colour geniuses at Zen have dyed speckled colourways to pair with variegated colourways of the same name AND the tags suggest other colours that will coordinate with these pairings. This is excellent news for people who are timid about colour mixing - the work has been done for you! - and for people who are as intrigued as we are by speckle-gradient knitting.

The overlapping colourways make it perfect for a "Find Your Fade Shawl" (by Andrea Mowry, available on Ravelry) or for "Speckled Fade" (by Stephen West, also on Ravelry). You may already have seen these patterns floating around Instagram, and their popularity is well deserved. They offer the chance to combine fabulous new skeins with those odds and ends of hand-dyed yarn that you can't bear to part with. Cheers to stash-busting and fun new yarn in one project!

Manos del Uruguay

New at the Beehive are two yarns from Manos del Uruguay (Spanish for "the hands of Uruguay"), and they are both luxurious and socially responsible, which we think is a great combination. Manos is a non-profit organization that provides social and economic opportunities for women in rural Uruguay through cooperatives. They are mem bers of the World Fair Trade Organization, and each tag has the location where the skein was dyed and the name of the woman who dyed it. Beehive is proud to support this wonderful organization, and their gorgeous yarns certainly make shopping with a conscience an easy choice. It makes us very happy to think that our craft can empower women in other parts of the world. It really is a win-win!

The first of our new Manos yarns is called Milo, a merino and linen blend (65% merino and 35% linen) with 350m to 100g. It is a single-ply fingering weight, but it would knit comfortably to a sport or even a double-knitting gauge in a suitable project. The linen and the merino take the dye differently, giving the yarn an almost heathered appearance. With wool for structure and linen for drape, you could make any number of beautiful things with Milo. This fibre blend is a great option for Victoria weather, as linen is great all year.

Our second new Manos yarn, Fino, is a blend of merino and silk (70% merino and 30% silk) with 450m to 100g. Also a single-ply fingering weight, Fino is perfect for shawls and other accessories that you wear against your skin, and there is ample yarn for a single-skein project if you need a little treat. The yarn has the sheen of silk, and there are both vibrant and muted colourways in the shop, so you are sure to find one you like.

Juniper Moon Farm

Last - but certainly not least - on our list of new arrivals is Herriot Fine from Juniper Moon Farm. Herriot Fine is a blend of alpaca and nylon (75% alpaca and 25% nylon), and it comes in a beautiful palette of heathers. It is a fingering weight with 420m to 100g, and we have a selection of patterns by Pamela Wynne specially designed for this yarn. These leaflets highlight the versatility of Herriot Fine, because there are lacy shawls, socks, garments, and fair isle accessories! The nylon makes the soft, drapey alpaca a bit more durable.

Herriot Fine is a classic yarn that produces a beautiful finished product. There are hundreds of projects on Ravelry, testifying to its suitability for almost any kind of project. We have just over fifteen colours in stock, and all the Beehivers are happily picking their favourite colour combinations. Stop by and join us!
