datahubThe Michigan Data Hub Welcomes Meal Magic

Good news from The Michigan Data Hub: Last week, the Meal Magic Corporation announced their participation in the Data Hub project. Version 9.9 of their system will include The Michigan Data Hub/Ed-Fi integration. Meal Magic has confirmed plans to be integrated with the Data Hubs by June 30, 2017.

What this means for districts:
As expressed in the 2016 Michigan Data Hub ROI Study, 71% of responding districts indicated the need for a connection between their student information system (SIS) and Food Service System. Since the purpose of the Data Integration Activity is to streamline the use of educational information statewide through common data and common solutions, the addition of food service systems is a natural fit.

The following story illustrates what a fully-integrated Michigan Data Hub might look like in the school day of a student:

A new student, Eve, starts school tomorrow at TRIG Elementary in Somewhereville, MI. In order for Eve to receive appropriate educational services and access to resources (such as lunch!), Eve's information must be entered into several data systems including a student information system (SIS), food service (such as Meal Magic), transportation, library, data warehouse, early literacy assessment, and possibly special education.
Last year, the district struggled with inputting this information on a timely and consistent basis. Data was hand-entered into a few of the systems and the integrations in place were incomplete and prone to breaking. Consequently, students often had to wait while school employees worked to make arrangements because they simply didn't have the data they needed in a timely and accurate manner.

This year, Eve's district is participating with The Michigan Data Hub. Once her information is entered into the district SIS, that information is sent to a regional data hub where all of the other district systems can get that data easily and consistently. In addition, the food service system sends lunch status information back to the data hub which is then relayed to the SIS and eventually used for state reporting. Even though the district changed their library vendor, the standardized connectivity of the data hubs allowed for the new library system to receive the data with little work. As a result, Eve was able to have an account in the food service system, check out a book at the library, and take an early literacy assessment without any issues  because all of these systems were fully integrated.

While this vision for Eve will still take some time to completely unfold, huge steps - like the addition of the Meal Magic system - have been made towards making it a reality. Learn more about why YOUR educational data systems vendor should become part of The Michigan Data Hub by visiting the Data Hubs section on the TRIG Website, located under the Activities pull down menu ( http://22itrig.org/activities/data-integration/). erateE-Rate Important Information
Administrative Window

USAC has established a new deadline for applicants. The administrative window created this year allows applicants to review and update their entity profiles in the E-Rate Productivity Center (EPC). This window closes on 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 26, 2017. As of February 27, 2017, all entity profiles will be locked and no changes will be made until Program Integrity Assurance (PIA) review. The following are important for the administrative window:
  • Although this period can and should be used for schools and districts to update student counts and National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Data, the most important is to ensure that entity lists are correct to reflect the proper recipients of service
  • This is also the time to add new schools and non-instructional facilities, and/or delete closed facilities to ensure that entities can be correctly listed as recipients of service
  • Libraries should make changes necessary to reflect updates in the number of branches or square footage
NSLP and entity data can only be added or changed by individual schools but schools are not the only people this data affects. Consortium applications and libraries rely on that data. Please take time to review your school's information in EPC and make necessary updates.

Form 471 Window
The Form 471 application window for funding year (FY) 17 has been announced. It will open on Monday, February 27, 2017 at noon EST and closes on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. EST. The Michigan Department of Education recommends that applicants wait two to four weeks after the Form 471 window opening to submit a Form 471.

The Fall 2016 NSLP Report for E-Rate FY17 will be available at www.michigan.gov/erate on February 16, 2017.

dldayJoin MDE and TRIG
for Digital Learning Day!

Join MDE on the second Thunderclap to support Digital Learning Day on February 23, 2017. The first one was such a success that we want to make sure the celebration continues on February 23 with another serge of activity on social media.

As you may recall, Digital Learning Day started as a grassroots effort that blossomed into a massive nationwide celebration of sharing innovative practices and ensuring youth have access to high-quality digital learning opportunities no matter where they live. This day provides a powerful venue for education leaders to highlight great teaching practices and showcase innovative teachers, leaders, and instructional technology programs that are improving student outcomes.

On February 23, Digital Learning Day will be celebrated across Michigan and we hope we can count on your continued support in sharing the power of digital learning as an instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student's learning experience. Visit https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/53065-celebrate-digital-learning-day; click on 'support with Facebook or Twitter', click 'add my support', and enter your email address. That's all it takes.

Please feel free to pass along this email. Below is a screen shot of this Thunderclap and the information about what Thunderclap is and how it works if you need it when you are sharing this message. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you for helping share the message.

What is a Thunderclap?
Thunderclap is a web service that allows people to automatically post a single message to their social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, and more) at a single, designated time. Think of it as an online "flash mob" - a collaborative action drawing attention to a specific cause. (Learn more!)

How can you help?
Click https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/51899-digital-learning-day-is-feb-23  and choose which social media platforms you'd like to engage with! Then, add your name to the Thunderclap. On Friday, January 27 a post announcing this year's Digital Learning Day will automatically publish to the accounts you selected and to those of everyone who signed up. It's that simple-add your name and the posts will be generated for you!

What else can I do?
  • Send an e-blast to your network inviting them to sign-up for the Digital Learning Day Thunderclap, which will share this message as well.
  • Share your own message of dedication to Every Day is Digital Learning Day.
  • Don't forget to use #DLDay when posting, tweeting, and snapping.
Thank you for helping us to acknowledge, elevate, and celebrate the integration of digital learning! If you have any questions about engaging with #MIDLDay or #DLDay on social media, please don't hesitate to reach out to Amanda Stoel at [email protected].
