Public Art Plan Workshop on February 8
The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, in partnership with the City of West Sacramento and the Crocker Art Museum, is holding a workshop on February 8th at 5pm to seek input for the public art component of the Downtown Specific Plan. Workshop participants will be asked to consider questions such as, how can public art connect the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento? Where should public art and other art experiences be located?  Once completed, the plan will suggest public art locations focusing on the vicinity of Capitol Mall. The public art component of the Downtown Specific Plan is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Holiday Music Series a Success
The 2016 Holiday Music Series has come to a successful end. Twenty talented local musicians and bands were engaged to sing, play, and even rock out at the Sacramento International Airport and, despite frigid temperatures and rain, at Loehmann’s Plaza and Pavilion’s Shopping Centers. The musicians engaged travelers and shoppers and drew wonderful crowds. One musician noted, “We had people dancing from note one, with kids right up in front dancing with us. Travelers waited to go get their cabs so they could listen longer. It was a fantastic experience!”  The Series was funded by the Airport and County Supervisor Susan Peters.

Organizations can apply to fund an arts or cultural project, or a capacity building initiative to strengthen their organization.  Stay tuned!

A Fond Farewell to Gloria Burt

Last month, the Sacramento community lost one of its shining stars - Gloria Burt.  Gloria was a tireless and long-standing advocate for the arts. She opened the Rara Avis Gallery (1980-1990) and created On The Wing - a monthly publication covering the area’s art scene. Gloria served as the KVIE Art Auction Coordinator for 23 years, and launched a monthly art walk, which eventually became Second Saturday. She was instrumental in forming the Arts and Business Council of Sacramento and served as a Commissioner on the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission in the eighties. Her leadership and passion for the arts has left a profound and lasting legacy in our region.

Chevo Ramirez
Sadly, Chevo Ramirez recently passed away last month after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. In his role as Regional Vice President for the Wells Fargo Foundation, Chevo was an omnipresent figure in Sacramento and was responsible for sponsoring many arts events and arts organizations. An engaging and dedicated advocate for the arts, he was honored as Philanthropist of the Year multiple times by several organizations. He was a mentor, a leader, and an agent for change.  Even after his diagnosis with Parkinson’s, he continued to give back - creating the Chevo Fund, which raised money for Parkinson’s research, and promoted awareness of the disease. Chevo’s generous and enthusiastic spirit will be greatly missed.
