Higher Education? Go for it!

Making the decision to go back to school can be difficult, especially when you already have so much on your plate. For Heather Forte, a resident living at Scottish Glen Apartments, it was a life-changing event that prompted her to pursue a higher education. "When I separated from my husband, I knew I couldn't just land my dream job; I had to work for it. I wanted to be able to provide for my kids without depending on someone else. I've dreamed of becoming a nurse and I decided to go for it!"

In 2007, Heather received her Certified Nursing Assistant certification and began working at a nursing and rehabilitation center. It was there that she realized she was destined to care for people and wanted to eventually become a registered nurse. She worked her way through various nursing programs, earning her diploma of Practical Nursing and later her North Carolina Board of Nursing certificate.

Currently, Heather is pursuing her Associates Degree in Nursing and will officially become a registered nurse upon graduation in May of this year. In total, she has earned $3,000 through CAHEC's David T. Peet Adult Education Grant, which has helped her pay for tuition, books, and supplies. "CAHEC's grant relieved a lot of the financial burden that goes along with the nursing program. Financial aid didn't cover all my expenses, so this grant really helped me."

Our Mission in Action

  • Congratulations to Rutherford Square in Connelly Springs, NC, on receiving $5,000 through CAHEC's Active Lifestyle Grant. This playground is a beautiful amenity for the property and provides an awesome space for residents to exercise and meet their neighbors.
  • CAHEC is partnering with the North Carolina Bankers Association Foundation's Camp Challenge to offer a week long summer camp experience to middle school students in our footprint. This camp - provided at no cost to the families - offers students a variety of traditional camp activities as well as an interactive financial literacy course. To learn more about this great opportunity, please visit the Youth Leadership Initiative section on our website.

Scholarships Available to CAHEC Residents

CAHEC has partnered with the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA) Educational Foundation to offer $25,000 in scholarships to high school seniors living in CAHEC-sponsored properties. In 2016, NAHMA made a big impact in the affordable housing industry, awarding $197,500 to students throughout the country. Gemi Ozdemir, NAHMA Educational Foundation Board Member, is excited about working with CAHEC. "This partnership is an excellent match because we both recognize the importance of higher education, especially in affordable housing. The kids will greatly benefit from these scholarships, and CAHEC helped take the NAHMA Educational Foundation to the next level of giving."

Visit the NAHMA Educational Foundation website for information on eligibility requirements and the online application process. To help NAHMA recognize CAHEC applicants, residents need to type "CAHEC" beside the name of the apartment community on their application. For questions regarding this scholarship, please contact Stefanie Lee at slee@cahec.com .
