"Even though he is a Cowboys fan and I am a Packers fan, we get along pretty well," jokes Horton's Kids mentor Amir of his mentee, Davin.

Amir and Davin are one of Horton's Kids' many mentoring relationships that we celebrated this January for National Mentoring Month

Thanks to the support of the In a Perfect World Foundation and dozens of caring adults, mentorship is a critical part of our work to empower children to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

"I am looking forward to the future and what we will accomplish in the next two years before he leaves for college," says Amir, pictured with mentee Davin.

We know that having a mentor can make a big difference in a child's life. With a mentor, at-risk youth are 55% more likely to enroll in college and 130% more likely to hold leadership positions in clubs or sports teams.

We also know that being a mentor can be incredibly rewarding . "I've learned a lot from this relationship, and it is very joyful for me to see his progress in what we have worked on," says Amir.

"My mentee has already taught me so much," says mentor Ileana, pictured with mentee Nieja (far left) and friends.

Horton's Kids mentor Ileana knows the power of mentoring firsthand and decided to pay it forward: " I decided to mentor because I am cognizant of how important my mentors are to me and realized that I can give a young one such advantage."

This month -- and every month! -- we're so grateful to our outstanding volunteer mentors, who dedicate time each month for regular phone calls and outings with their mentees.

Horton's Kids empowers children living in one of Washington, DC's most under-resourced communities so that they can graduate high school ready for success in college, career, and life.  The children we serve live in a community with one of the highest rates of violent crime in DC, where the average family income is less than $10,000 per year. Horton's Kids operates a safe and welcoming Community Resource Center just steps from where the children live.
