Keystone XL Pipeline KXL is a proposed 36-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, beginning in Hardisty, Alberta, and extending south to Steele City, Nebraska. Hardisty, Alta. real estate agent Connie Beringer says business interest in the town is growing just days after U.S. President Donald Trump revived the possibility of constructing the Keystone XL pipeline.
The area around the municipality 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton will house storage tanks and other structures needed for the northern end of TransCanada Corp.'s 1,900-kilometre pipeline tying Alberta's oilsands to Gulf Coast refineries.
Although there could be years of negotiations and challenges before dirt starts to move on the $8-billion project, Beringer says she has already handled dozens of calls from people inquiring about buying homes as investments.
"It's hard to believe that Trump could make my phone ring, but he has. He just made one announcement and my phone is ringing fairly steadily."
The Realty Executives agent also manages about 30 rental properties. At least half of them were empty six months ago, but now most are occupied.
"I have definitely seen an increase in people coming here to work," says Beringer, a town councillor.
"With oil prices going up as well, that's made a difference. Some companies have decided to open up a little bit."

A private member's bill aimed at protecting consumers from unexpected repair charges will not proceed after industry members said it was unworkable and redundant.
MLAs decided Monday Bill 203, which was under review by the standing committee on families and communities, was too flawed to recommend it proceed to second reading.
The decision came after a day of testimony from industry groups, auto dealerships and repair shops. Every group except one called on the government to drop the bill.
