GSSCC Advocates Against Mandate to Publish Salaries
GSSCC was in Annapolis last week Thursday to testify in opposition to HB398/SB404, which would require employers to include the minimum salary for a position in any job opening announcement and would prohibit employers from inquiring about candidates' salary history.  GSSCC joined colleagues from Chambers and business groups across the state to help legislators understand the challenges businesses would face if this bill were enacted, and to question the proponents assertion that it would solve pay disparity issues between men and women, as well as minorities. GSSCC Tracking Legislation of Significance to Business
To date, more than 2,500 pieces of legislation have been introduced in the General Assembly, including new legislation mandating a $15 minimum wage for the state. GSSCC has reviewed these bills and is tracking those that affect business and Silver Spring. Click here for a summary of relevant legislation. Silver Spring Library (900 Wayne Avenue) is hosting a Black History Month author event  from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  on Thursday, February 23. Georgetown University law professor Sheryll Cashin will discuss "Race Not Place."  For more information, click  here .  

* Silver Spring Inc. is hosting a skill development meet-up from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, at I/O Spaces (8120 Fenton Street #204).  Keynote speaker is Brian Loebig of Loebig Ink, LLC.  For more information, click here.

* Montgomery College President Dr. DeRionne Pollard will join Pastors Chris and Dennis Wiley, Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, for "Civility in Action: Dialogues across Difference," a conversation about reconciliation, civility, and ways to improve communication to enhance understanding. This free event is at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, February 28, at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring  Cultural Arts Center. The Wileys have decades of experience in theology, ministry, and counseling, and have led countless conversations about the intersections of racial difference and reconciliation.
 
* Gandhi Brigade Youth Media is accepting submissions for the 2017 Montgomery County Youth Media Festival. Winners in each category will be screened at the AFI Silver Theatre on April 29, 2017. Click here for submission details and other information.

* Thunderbolts baseball will host its eighth annual "Thunderbolts Fun Day" from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, at Bair Stadium. The event features a free baseball clinic for youth ages 7 to 14, along with special activities and prizes.  Opening day is set for June 9.

About GSSCC Committee/Team Meetings:  All GSSCC members are welcome to participate in Chamber committees. Members are welcome to attend committee meetings to assess interest in joining a committee. Meetings are typically held in the GSSCC Conference Room. Advance RSVP is required and priority will be given to existing committee members when speakers are scheduled.

Lane Closures on Second Avenue Next Two Satrudays
Southbound vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Second Avenue between Cameron Street and Colesville Road will be diverted between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, and Saturday, March 4, to facilitate the construction of crane operations for 8401 and 8403 Colesville Road. Questions should be directed to Dave Devang at 240-777-2187.
