Snow, Ice, Rain...But Still Plenty Happening at PCL!
The weather hasn't been so kind of late but this is New England and we don't let a little frozen precipitation slow us down! Thanks to everyone who supported our Spelling Bee fundraiser - check out a short report here. We are excited to report on our rewarding partnerships with two Providence children's festivals and provide a round-up on other news. Enjoy!
Free Providence Children's Film Festival Workshops & Screenings

PCL is proud to partner with Providence Children's Film Festival (PCFF) and offer three festival library events. PCL shares PCFF's mission and vision that all youth deserve access to great visual stories that delight and challenge as well as opportunities to develop the skills to be their own creative media makers. These workshops and screenings help to fulfill those aims.

Spelling Bee: Big Bucks for Big Words

More than 90 people squeezed into a packed AS220 on January 28 to enjoy a good-natured war of words that raised valuable funds for PCL. The contest got off to a gentle start but quickly got more  challenging for competing spellers with selections such as  whippoorwill oleaginous hoyden  and  objurgate . In the end, there could only be one winner and Rebecca Maxwell lifted the coveted title "Best Speller of the Year" after acing the winning combo  hartebeest  / caliph ; Ian Cozzens was runner-up.

The Favorite Book Play Festival: Get Your Tickets!

The Manton Avenue Project (MAP) works to inspire the creative voices of kids living in the Olneyville neighborhood through "playmaking". On February 7, Mount Pleasant Library had a special visit from some of the Project's talented young writers, who eagerly sifted through the library's book collections to find inspiration for their own personal writing projects. The students are writing plays for MAP's March production,  Once Upon a Time:The Favorite Book Play Festival.

Homeless Women Need Our Help!

When one of our former librarians, Charlene, told PCL that homeless women in Providence were in urgent need of feminine hygiene products, we knew we had to help. The nonprofit social services agency, Amos House, says that sanitary pads and tampons are among the products least likely to be donated to them by the public, leaving many of their female clients in urgent need. PCL is helping Charlene to coordinate a large donation of these essential items to Amos House. You'll find a donation bin at all PCL locations until the end of February.
