A Message From
2017 FL CCIM Chapter President
Scott Lloyd CCIM, RPA

The Time is Right for Change!
Having just concluded the Florida CCIM Chapter Business Meetings and Florida REALTORS® Mid-Winter Meetings, I'd like to share a few take-aways.
I am pleased to inform our members that the Florida CCIM Chapter Board of Directors voted unanimously to create an endowed scholarship in the name of our friend Cynthia Shelton, CCIM, CRE. Cynthia has long been a champion of professional education, the Florida REALTORS® and the Florida CCIM Chapter, serving as the CCIM Institute President in 2002 and the President of the Florida REALTORS® Association in 2009. We all appreciate the dedication and passion Cynthia brings to our world. It is an honor to recognize her supreme commitment by assisting in the education of others.
For the first time, two major objectives of the Florida REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) primarily benefit commercial real estate concerns. The Florida REALTORS® are committed to expending considerable resources with these two specific goals in mind:
First, RPAC will strive to reduce the Florida sales tax on businesses that rent commercial space. I am encouraged that both Governor Rick Scott and Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam have identified these taxes as targets for the upcoming session. We now need to engage the legislators.
Second, there is a perfect storm of opportunity and our industry is counting on CCIMs to step up.

Leadership from the  CCIM Florida Chapter and its 8 Districts awarded a record 31 scholarships to industry professionals across Florida.
The scholarships, designed to increase the knowledge and professionalism of our commercial real estate industry will assist professionals that are seeking to further their professional capabilities via CCIM courses to be held throughout Florida in 2017.
"This is the most scholarships we have ever announced, we are pleased to offer such an impressive member benefit," reports Mike Reichenbach, Chair of the Chapter's Scholarship Committee.
These scholarships are thanks to the generosity of the Districts, State or endowed by many benefactors who recognize that only with education and training can we meet our obligation to our clients and industry, Reichenbach adds.

District of the Year and Other Award Winners Announced At First Time Event

The  Florida Chapter 's most outstanding district for 2016, as well as a number of highly dedicated and involved chapter volunteers were recently honored with special awards and recognition by Florida Chapter Leadership at a special dinner held for the first time in their honor.

"The Annual Awards Dinner was created as a special place to acknowledge membership and outstanding participation throughout the year," explains Chere Roane, immediate past president of the Florida CCIM Chapter. "This event allowed the members to really give thanks to each other rather than have a quick hand off of paper at the BOD meetings - I hope it continues," she adds.

The first (Annual) Awards Dinner was held during the Florida Chapter's statewide meetings in Orlando and was well attended.
The District of the Year Award was based on the most improved, use of social media, membership increases, the range and diversity of events held, and more.

Gov. Scott Includes Reduction in State's Business Rent Tax in Proposed 2017 Budget

Florida Gov. Rick Scott told Realtors® and CCIMs in Orlando that he again included an issue close to members' hearts - a reduction in the state's business rent tax - as part of his proposed 2017 budget that he'll send to the Florida Legislature for consideration.

Gov. Scott announced his tax cuts statewide in a two-day tour, with one of the five stops at Florida Realtors® Mid-Winter Meetings going on last week in Orlando. The governor made the announcement during the Florida Real Estate Trends 2017 conference.

The Florida CCIM Chapter, in conjunction with the Florida REALTORS® RPAC, is in support of the reduction in the state's business rent tax, explains Florida Chapter 2017 President Scott Lloyd.

"Most people already know that Florida is the only state in the country that has a tax on commercial leases," Lloyd shared.

"We urge our fellow CCIM Chapter members' support of this reduction. The tax is unfair to our small businesses, and it makes it more difficult to attract new business and industry to Florida. It also causes an additional burden if an existing Florida business hopes to invest more or expand. The bottom line is support of this rent tax reduction supports smaller businesses statewide," Lloyd added.
