Faith Feature

Brotherly (and Sisterly) Love
As we celebrate Saint Valentine's Day, we remember the witness of all the martyrs   who have shed their blood for the love of Christ and neighbor.

We also remember the memorial of Saints Cyril and Methodius, brothers who dedicated their lives to bring the message of Christ's love to the Slavic peoples (and developed the alphabet that we know as "Cyrillic"). We think also of St. Paul's many beautiful writings on love in his letters.

With all these themes in mind, the Catholic Bishops in the United States recognize this week as National Marriage Week and have developed several resources for strengthening marriage and family life. They remind us of Pope Francis' words in Amoris Laetitia ("The Joy of Love"), his Apostolic Exhortation on love in the family: "The word of God tells us that the family is entrusted to a man, a woman and their children, so that they may become a communion of persons in the image of the union of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit" (n. 29).

Whatever our state in life, may we strive to foster that communion in our relations with one another, that we also may image the love of the Holy Trinity. "So faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love" (1 Cor. 13:13).
