Help fill the pantry of people in need

Did you know that last year Foodbank SA saved 1.5 million kilograms of food from being wasted in landfill and fed close to 85,000 people experiencing hunger in SA?

Residents are being asked to donate non-perishable food to those in need in the community as part of a new partnership between the City of Marion and Foodbank SA.

Foodbank SA collects and redistributes surplus food to more than 520 welfare organisation and 460 school breakfast programs.
Our council offices at Glandore Community Centre, Cove Civic Centre and on Sturt Rd are standing by to receive donations over the next month, until 6th March.
Now is the time to clean out your pantry and donate non-perishable food at least 2-3 months before its "use by" date to Foodbank SA.

 The most wanted items are:
  • Tuna
  • Canned ham
  • Canned veggies
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned spaghetti
  • Pasta sauce
  • Long life milk
Many people think hunger is only a Third World problem, but unfortunately, there is real need in our community right now.

If everyone lends a hand by donating non-perishable food we can make life that much easier. Foodbank also takes money donations. Every $1 donated to Foodbank equates to $8 of food that can be purchased for programs such as Schools' Breakfast or Everyday or Christmas Hampers.

Local natives in the spotlight - Calostemma purpureum
(Garland Lily)

This flower has just started flowering on the Coastal Walking Trail, flowering in response to summer rains. It is unusual in that it sends up the flowers first followed by the leaves.  Calostemma belongs to the plant family Amaryllidaceae, a large family readily recognized in horticulture with such members as Daffodil and Belladona.  The genus name Calostemma comes from the Greek, kalos, beautiful, and stemma, crown.  The plant grows in rocky soils along our coast and makes an ideal rockery garden specimen, taking up very little space but with extenbded flowering stems high enough so that is becomes quite obvious.  Propagation is simple as the seed capsules often shoot on the soiul surface and can be directly sown into a pot.

Weaving Communities will provide a platform of making where people will be welcomed into a creative space to interact chat and share ideas.
Iconic images of Australiana interweave with symbols of multiculturalism, providing references to Australia's diverse community and immigration history.
Sculptures weave together joining people and ideas.
Participants are invited to spend time together making, writing, weaving, wishing, tying and rearranging plant material and found objects. In doing so, connecting with their sense of place on a number of different levels.

100% Renewable Energy Communities - FREE event

Hosted by Conservation Council of SA

When: 6 - 7.30pm, Monday 20 February 2017

The Joinery, 111 Franklin Street Adelaide

Described as a world class energy magician, Søren Hermansen has spearheaded the transformation of his home - the island of Samsø in Denmark - to become the world's first 100% renewable energy island in 2007.
original.jpg

What's relevant to South Australia in Søren's story is the way Samsø created its energy transition, largely from within the community's own resources. Søren was instrumental in bringing the community on this journey from skepticism to belief in the benefits of clean energy independence and the new economy it can create.

Come along to be inspired by the Samsø story and to find out what you need to know to help set our state on its own journey.
Søren is Time Magazine's Hero of the Environment 2008 and has recently written Commonity = Common + Community, a book about modern commons and how to understand them. For more information about Søren's work, see Samsø Energy Academy:  www.energiakademiet.dk

Soren will be introduced by Heather Smith who has recently returned from a Churchill Fellowship looking at community energy around the world as a way of understanding the deeper energy transitions that are underway.
